There was something in the way he smiled that betrayed him. Maybe it was the way his lips never curved just the right way, or the lack of shine in his eyes, but when he smiled, everyone could see right through him.
At first, it hadn’t bothered him. When he was young, with only secrets of club house locations and girls that maybe weren’t so icky to hide, he didn’t mind smiling. But as the years wore on and lies and truths became one in a never ending cycle of things hidden, he realized it wasn’t worth it.
So he did what he could and forgot how to smile. It had been hard, but after days and weeks, most people left anyways. That made it easier.
He grew up and people thought him mysterious and dangerous because of his constant blank face. He would just stare straight ahead and forget their whispers and eyes. None of them mattered anyways.
Two days after his eighteenth birthday he packed a bag and left the family that barely spared a glance at him. There were no goodbye hugs or tears. They simply watched his fading silhouette on the horizon and turned back to dinner.
He walked until something or someone would catch his eye. Sometimes he would stay for months and get some job at a dive bar just because he liked the way the fish monger called out the daily specials. Other times he would stay just the night to watch the sunrise in a place that didn’t belong to him. He collected them all in his mind and pretended they meant so much more to him than they did. Because, everyone should have something they hold dear.
He was twenty when a boy in a mohawk offered him a warm body and a place to stay for the night. His eyes disappeared when he smiled and he had been so fascinated that someone could do that at every opportunity and still not reveal anything that he stayed with him until it snowed.
Winter fell hard that year and he laid his hand at the window glass for three weeks before the desire to move on had infected him so deeply that he left all his memories of sunsets and eye smiles behind in the rush. The boy didn’t stop him as he followed the road out of town and he was so grateful that he nearly smiled.
Summer came so mildly that he barely noticed it’s presence. A small music shop drew his attention and he applied for the job before he changed his mind. The man behind the counter took one look at him and hired him on the spot. He didn’t know anything about music or sales, but the man didn’t mind. He just smiled and touched his arm, or stroked his cheek and taught him everything slowly.
The first time he tried to follow him to his bed, the man stopped him.
“You aren’t ready.”
He was struck with anger for the first time in years and that thought alone begged him to pack up and move on. But, then the man smiled and ran his fingers through his hair.
“Lets go and get you a hair cut tomorrow. Then we’ll move your stuff in here.”
He felt something strange bubble up in his chest before the door was shut in his face. He didn’t argue as the small bag of belongings found their way into Jiyong’s closet and onto his night table. He slept on the couch and watched the man sleep and felt absolutely terrified at the change.
Fall was quiet and routine in it’s sweeping winds and brisk air. Jiyong took him to a beach and they sat huddled under a blanket while the tide brushed up on the shore. He didn’t ask whey they sat in the cold and Jiyong didn’t answer why his lips were suddenly on his.
They had fallen into bed like an arching, breathing, epic madness and he thought how terrible it was that soon he would feel the desire to leave. Jiyong smiled at him and ran a thumb over his lips.
“If the moment ever comes, just know, I won’t give you up.”
His eyes widened at the thought that somehow, someone had managed to see through him despite his careful lack of expression. He tried to push him away, but found he could only pull him closer. Jiyong whispered little nothings in his hair and somehow it made the rapid beating in his chest fade to a dull and steady thud.
Winter came back and he packed all his belongings into a ragged blue bag at the foot of the bed. Jiyong sat crosslegged and tears hid behind his eyes. It was the first time he had packed when everything in his body was telling him to stay. Jiyong’s hands shook when he placed them over the handle of the grasped bag.
“What if I told you I loved you?”
He looked at the man and felt something foreign pull at his face. The sides of his lips quirked upwards and his eyes shrunk down. Something odd but vaguely familiar filled his chest and he tried to recall days before secrets and lies mixed with truths.
Jiyong took the bag from him and placed it back in the closet.
“You can always leave tomorrow.”
His smiled didn’t fade, but he found it didn’t worry him so much when Jiyong was pulling him to the bed and filling him with warmth from his fingertips and love confessions.
He could always leave tomorrow.

Again, here are the lyrics, if you want them:
There's part of me
You'll never know
The only thing
I'll never show
Hopelessly, I'll love you endlessly
Hopelessly, I'll give you everything
But I won't give you up.
I won't let you down
I won't leave you falling
If the moment ever comes
It's plain to see,
It's trying to speak
Cherished dreams
Forever asleep
Hopelessly, I'll love you endlessly
Hopelessly, I'll give you everything
But I won't give you up
I won't let you down
I won't leave you falling
If the moment ever comes.
Hopelessly, I'll love you endlessly
Hopelessly, I'll give you everything
But I won't give you up
I won't let you down
I won't leave you falling
But the moment never comes.
