[Thanks to his castle-induced nap, Durge is alert on the defensive in seconds. He addresses whoever is nearby]
You might want to get back...
[He settles in a wide stance, necessary to swing the huge blade he pulls from the sling on his back. It's so large, in fact, that he quickly finds it's easier to turn the sword and smack the birds out of the air with the flat of the blade.
[Carolina happens to be standing right near Durge when he addresses her. She does indeed step back to fight off the ones approaching from behind them, effectively covering his six, but that huge blade doesn't make her want to stand further away though; if nothing else, the freelancer is fast and if it comes swinging her way, she readily dodges it.]
[She has a pistol and a knife as actual weapons, but right now she has a torch that she's using to take out more at once. As well, a pistol will quickly run out of ammo.]
I've got a knife, too. [And swinging the torch at a few more of the bat/bird/things as she keeps close enough to properly protect him.]
[Carolina likes the sound of that as she burns a few more of the birds, keeping herself focused on making sure nothing gets past her. She notices a few dropping in trom above and alerts him,] Above us.
[The knight shifts and swings the sword in a high arc, the blade whistling a few inches above Carolina's head, taking out most of the invading birds, though he misses one, which hands on his shoulders]
[Carolina ducks down at his warning, hearing that whistling without fear, but his shout gets her attention and she straightens, reaching for that bird and grabbing it by one of its wings. With a sharp tug, she pulls it from his shoulders, but it's not down in the slightest as it squawks and flaps against her grip.]
No problem. Did it bite you? [And hey efficiency, she likes that. She, too, goes back to her stance, noticing that the numbers of birds have definitely dwindled, but she's not about to let her guard down.]
[Carolina's usual garb would definitely qualify as more complicated metal plating. She swats at another bird with the torch, relaxing a little at the lack of the things.]
Fairly. Heavier than leather and takes getting used to, but less restrictive than metal plating. And less expensive. Few knights can afford such armor. And, of course, it can only protect what it covers...

Seriously, you might want to stand clear]

[He grunts and heaves the sword around for another swinging, taking out a few more of the pests]

[He's seen warriors wear nothing but fur, or only leather, or more complicated metal plating.]
