crossposted from my journal...

Trying to drive me crazy, this boy. Check this out.

This child HATES homework. LOATHES it. Will lie, kill, cheat, steal to get OUT of doing homework.

Getting straight D's in school because he won't turn in/complete assignments.

Challenge him.... try to get his school to put him in advanced classes even though he has straight D's....
Is he ADD? This is sooooo common with kids that are actually, really ADD. (as opposed to hyper kids that people just don't want to deal with...)

He's ALREADY in the GATE program at his school (his second year of involvement in the program). His teacher is just as much at wits' end as I am - we kid about who's going to go bald first from tearing at our hair!

I'm still betting he is ADD... and maybe you will need to look into strategies(NOT MEDS) to deal with that ( ... )

Honestly, I would be doing neither and finding out if there are more advanced classes for him. Most likely he hates doing the homework because it's too easy for him. I know I had a similar problem when I was in school. I was practically failing, but did amazingly well with standardized tests. Boredom begets bad grades a huge chunk of the time.

He's bored. Try student directed learning, maybe. Let him teach himself at his own rate, while you check him and test him.

What subject(s) do you teach him?

LOL... okay, all kidding aside, I've been the wordsmith (I was an English Lit major in college) and I'm proud that he's picked up the appreciation for the written word...

I am seriously just thinking this guy has his own drumbeat to march to... homeschooling? Ah, I'm dreaming...

I taught 5th grade Unfortunately, it often goes hand in hand that students who are advanced in reading (especially) get bored very easily and therefore learn to be lazy and hate it. I have had countless kids that did this ( ... )
