Yes, dear, that is kind of rude. Depending on how well you know the person, you might want to try, "You don't have a job? I'm sorry to hear that." Of course if you asked me if I was on welfare, I'd probably laugh, but some people find it really humiliating to have to admit to that. It's okay, you're so cute, I'm sure most people woudln't take it the wrong way.

I have to admit that if you had ever asked me that I would have been humiliated and more than likely left. it is really hard and embarrasing to have to go onto welfare just to put food on the table or be able to see a doctor... goddess knows.

I wish I'd had you with me at Trader Joe's today so you could've asked that lady why she had a doily on her head.

Even if you had left off the welfare remark it would have still been a rude question, IMHO.

How a person supports themselves, or doesn't isn't anyone else's business.

Yet, you can always ask the question, but be prepared to have someone smack you for it. ;)

Come to my side of town and ask that question. 9 out of 10 will take no offense. They will gladly whip out that little WIC card with the grand canyon on it and tell you, Isn't it cool I get free milk!
