So I'm in the car, waiting for alternate side to be over, and listening to NPR BBC News. They were discussing Prop 8 in CA, and they actually had someone saying 'If they let same sex couples get married, soon people will want to marry their dogs

Well I remember talking about ghost marriages and big toe marriages in anthropology. Yes, you read right, a man could marry his big toe. I don't remember how that helped the line of decent but I do remember that in the ghost marriage, a family would marry their son's ghost to a woman who would then have sex with other men under the cover of darkness until she became pregnant and then the child would be considered the progeny of the ghost. Which is all just to point out that marriage in itself is all about economics and the lines of decent. Who get the goods when I die. So I don't understand why people are so much in an uproar. I mean truly it really comes down to equal rights and protections for a partner, not about love or caring. Some people are so closed minded that they can't see the forest for the trees.
