PDI's editorial today:

The people who promoted the ill-starred show may not know it (but how could they not have known it?), but they were actually exploiting the poor to build higher ratings. Shows like “Wowowee” promote mendicancy, the fast-buck mentality instead of honest and hard work and perseverance. They dangle before poor people visions of ( Read more... )

you can't put all the blame on the organizers...it's a business, and in business you try to exploit every advantage you can. i'm not saying it wasn't for lack of arrogance that they did what they did, but you have to admit, people are really just easy to manipulate. i mean these are the same people who get the major percentage of voting power come election time, the same people who have the loudest voices about injustice and how their lives are so ruined because other people did not do their jobs. and all they had to do was wave money in front of their faces, and all we do is pity the poor and shout in outrage when something like this happens. seriously, we have become a nation of democratically-spoiled brats who wave the righteousness card at every turn.

"it's a business, and in business you try to exploit every advantage you can."

That's all fine and good as long as in exploit that advantage you don't end up exploiting people, and worse, causing them to get hurt (or killed) in the end.

People are easy to manipulate, especially the already desperately poor in the Philippines. All you have to do is dangle P500 in front of the urban poor or homeless, and you can get them to march/congregate anywhere, speak up for or against anything, vote for anybody, or boost your TV show's ratings.

The organizers knew what they were doing. They knew that by promising millions of pesos worth of prizes that thousands of people would come. But did they ensure that they could safely accomodate all the masses? Regrettably, no.

thats what i was saying, it's so easy to manipulate people, especially the 'masses'. so instead of pointing the finger, it would be less inclined to happen if they just shut up and do their jobs.

that's so true, shows like this aren't helping at all.... there's nothing wrong with having a game show, sana man lang they raise the bars when it comes to entertainment and organization, sohw something that people will inspire people to stay positive.

nope i don't have a relative in abs. i agree that someone has to owe up and do their job but fingers aren't only for pointing, they are there for doing. and if you really wanted to do something about this 'terrible disaster', then do something, not mouth off like a stuck pig.
