I don't know why men wear boxer briefs in general, but I can tell you why my husband USED to.

Not being a shopping guru, he thought that all of the boxers you could buy were REALLY EXPENSIVE, as in $12 a set. So the boxer briefs came in packs and were much cheaper. So I introduced him to the fact that they sell boxers in the packs and for much cheaper and now he only wears the boxers.

If I were to guess though, I'd say boxer briefs are for guys who don't like the too-tight briefs or the too-loose boxers. It's a comfortable medium.
