I -hate- dentistry with a passion. It's such a big part of practice, though, that I really try to get better with each one I do. Huge kudos to you for recovering a dog teetering on CHF with hideous dental disease. Well done!

I like dentistry with the caveats that pre- and post-op radiographs plus quality tools have to be available. I won't do a dental prophylaxis without dental radiographs, ultrasonic scaler and a supply of new bits for the drill. Sectioning a carnassial with a Dremel is one time too many.

I already carry my own Mayo & curved sharp-sharp scissors (for enucleations), and needle driver for practices with less than stellar surgical packs. I'm thinking a periosteal elevator is about to join their ranks.

I agree about having the right tools. My boss loves dentistry, so we've got all the fancy stuff and radiographs are mandatory. The periosteal elevator is a godsend for those gingival flaps.
