Woolley woke me up at about 7am this morning when I heard her chewing on something metal sounding. I got up to see if she was chewing the bars (Stereotypical behaviour that I really wish to avoid her developing) but it turns out she was gnawing at the spout of her water bottle. She does sometimes do this when she's taking a drink, but this time she ( Read more... )

Ew meal worms! I give my hamster a tiny bit of cat food sometimes. I didn't know until recently that hamsters are omnivores actually. I feed mine mostly Oxbow pellets.

What kind of shavings are you using? The oil from soft-wood tree can cause respiratory infections in small animals. A paper-based litter is preferred I think.

I have looked up about the issues with shavings and have found out the one I'm using is pine, but upon further research, a few big hamster websites/forums based in the UK say that all UK pine shavings are fine to use, because they're kiln dried to get rid of the oils that cause the issue. Though I think a lot of people do still try and avoid using them anyway, but the shavings I'm using now I used for all my other hamsters and none of them ever had any breathing difficulties/respiratory infections and Woolley seems fine with it. I think the issue is bigger in the US with the shavings from what I've heard ( ... )

It's good that you've done research!
How about shredding newspapers into little pieces yourself? It doesn't cost anything and it's kinda like carefresh.

My dad and I don't buy newspapers most of the time and I'd be concerned over the ink in them since I don't know what ink is used in our papers.

Believe me, I did a loooot of research and learned a lot before getting Woolley. Partly because of what I've learned at college and partly because the only reason my dad was iffy with me getting another hamster was because all my other hamsters bar-chewed, so I made it my mission to make sure she has the best of everything to avoid her developing this issue. So far, so good!

Aww bless her. At least she was telling you that something wasn't right with her water!

Woolley is one picky little hamster - full meal worm - lol no not eating that. Half of one - sure.

Lol you did say when you bought the log cabin that she likely would not use it.

Glad that she is coming out of her shell :)

Oooh Pokemon GBC - epic! I had a bit of chocolate as well. Some of it is still with us (which is unusual for me)

Just where are you going to keep your new Pokedolls lol.

Yeah XD She doesn't use the cabin like I thought, but she likes hiding behind it!! XD I might just save it for any future hammies I may get. Woolley just likes to do things her way!

Yeah, it was so odd that she wouldn't take full ones and I even broke one up and put it on the ledge and she still wouldn't touch it. It wasn't until I broke some up and added it to her food that she started realizing they were yummy things to eat! Now she loves them XD
