You know, up until the flurry of HotMails this afternoon, I didn't even know we had a TV station. Now I'm really impressed with the ability of people that have not seen the show in question to offer commentary about it. It's nice to know that there are always some folks around to make mountains out of molehills they haven't even seen.

The off switch is an amazing thing. More people should find it.

Problem solved! The whole racist, sexist, inappropriate joke thing is a "server malfunction" at the Daily Orange away from having never happened at all! The campus TV station has been shut down, the station's Web site is gone, and the episodes have been expunged from the Internet. The campus is safe for Tolerance and Diversity again! I'm glad that's all behind us now!

U.S.S. Diversity, full steam ahead!

I think I share your frustration in that "server malfunction" is not the same as an explanation of why the information has been removed, at whose request, for what reasons, and how someone who is interested might clearly go about getting the information. A statement from the university that perhaps explains what has happened (without specific examples) and then recounts what is happening now, states the future of the TV station (because there is one), and encourages people to get involved by pointing them to a schedule of events related to this issue so that those who are not as well informed as they would like to be may come and listen. (I think that's the longest sentence fragment I've ever written, but I'm too confused by the clauses to figure out how to fix it). Anyway, simply removing the "problem" does not make it go away, and I think this university has a long history of doing exactly that.

I don't understand what you're doing with the sentence fragment. An "explanation" that dances around specifics is not an explanation at all. Isn't the first rule of informed writing the emphasis on the "informed" part? Do we accept generalizations and unsupported claims from our students?

There is no TV station.

Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor disbanded the student-run television station HillTV on Thursday.

Cantor spoke to former HillTV General Manager Rich Levy, the department heads and the former sports director at 4:30 p.m. to tell them of her decision to disable the station. Cantor also told the HillTV representatives of the administration's decision to create a new student-run television network on campus.

The HillTV Web site, HillTV.com, was removed Thursday evening.

[. . .]
The physical presence of equipment and the promise of a TV station yet to come does not consititute a TV station. That "the former HillTV studio, located in Watson Hall, will still be open for student production use" does not constitute ( ... )
