Back in Estelí

So, this weekend was wonderful: peaceful, quiet, and fun. I got to talk quite a bit with Shannon and get to just relax with her. My stomach is getting better poco a poco. The amoebas aren´t completely gone and I worry that they will come back because I can´t get away from tap water in my host family´s house (i.e., the ice, the salad being ( Read more... )

You'll be surprised how many words are sticking in the back of your head! And make sure you get enough sleep; your brain is working doubletime and needs its rest to assimilate all that espanish.

Hey, Cory! So sorry to hear about those wascally amoebas. Keep taking those meds that your friend scored for you, but more importantly, DON'T DRINK THE TAP WATER and DON'T EAT ANYTHING RAW, ESPECIALLY FRESH PRODUCE!!! That probably seems like unsound nutritional advice, but otherwise, you may NEVER part company with those damn buggly wugglies.

Because you probably remembered to take your Spanish/English dictionary with you, and because you're learning who you can rely on to help translate for you, you shouldn't need to hear this, but just in case: Buena suerte con su cerebro cansado!

I love you!

I figured I should write to you in Espanol mas seguido. Nos da gusto que hayas llegado bien aunque estes enferma del estomago... Yo creo que no tienes opcion de tomar y comer otros alimentos, verdad? No bottled water? Esperamos que te alivies pronto. Believe it or not tu estas aprendiendo mucho vocabulario en espanol. Maybe you should spend some dias con mi mama en El Paso. Ella habla mucho ask Ken about it! She'll teach you muchas palabras (buena y malas) y frases tambien. Sigue estudiando y cuidate.

Te queremos

Of COURSE Cory has options! She can drink bottled and canned sodas and fruit juices, and since Cory LOVES beer, that wouldn't be too tough a medicinal course for her to follow, either! Bottled water would be a really nice thing to have, but there ARE other options.

As for food, my daughter lived without fresh vegetables for two months in American Somoa simply because fresh vegetables didn't exist there. And although most people wouldn't want to do so, I imagine that one can live without fresh fruit for that length of time, as well.

One thing more...you're very lucky to still have a mother who talks a lot. Once upon a time, I had one of those talkative mothers, and I'd give ANYthing to hear her voice now.

Language-learning isn't linear. It goes in leaps and plateaus. It's like cleaning your room--it gets messier for a while, and then the pieces start to find their places and it gets a whole lot better.

I'm so proud of you, by the way, just for making this trip at all. I've learned so much about Nicaragua from Shannon, and now I'm seeing it through fresh eyes with you. It's wonderful--thank you!

Good luck with your tummy.

Just think... you tummy will be lined with steel by the time you return! You are one of the most patient people I've ever met... just in case you needed reminding.

Keep the updates coming!
