Yet another rainy weekend in Costa Rica

Jun 04, 2011 14:37

The rainy weather has me indoors doing housework, grad school prep, and watching old sitcoms online (mostly the latter). So question for all of you PCVs/RPCVs out there:

What were weekends like in your country of service?

I was in West Africa were we got A LOT of rain four months of the year. In the first year of my service I was all about spending as much time with my family and the community as I could so I would take out things to do with the kids like puzzles and games that I made along with books. The houses are are row style with large covered porches so it made it really easy to sit out there all day and there was never a shortage of kids wanting to hang out. As time went on I found myself staying in my hut a lot more, reading and what not, to get a 'break' but I knew then and I still think now that time spent with the community is what I'll remember most fondly.

Weekends in Morocco lemon__lies June 4 2011, 22:37:22 UTC
I am currently serving in Morocco as a Youth Development volunteer. I generally try to get to the youth center in my village every day (even the weekends) because when things do happen (like rain, sand storms, strikes...) things shut down forever!

Morocco is too big for much weekend traveling so we get together with nearby PCVs on occasion :)

Saturday was a market day and so it meant biking into town to stock up. Sunday meant closing the blinds and sleeping in while all the neighbors were at church, followed by chores.

South Africa was rainy in the winter and cold, summer was hot and dry. I spent most weekends alone either going to the mall nearby or sitting at home Skyping friends.. kinda a boring little town.

I assumed before serving in Turkmenistan that every country HAD a weekend. Actually in T-stan they only have a one day weekend, Sunday. On Saturday nights I'd often go to a wedding, and on Sunday I'd usually hang out, visit local friends or talk to neighbors or watch carpet making and talk to the carpet makers, do laundry, try to learn the language, and write my lesson plans.
