I think the best present I ever got was from a fellow PCV. For my birthday she gave me a set of homemade rune cards, along with a handmade guidebook for reading the runes. It was the most interesting and thoughtful gift I have ever recieved. I still have them in my nightstand, and occasionally pull them out and read my future. ;D
I'm wearing them all right now: a dress my host mom made me, a silver ring from a co teacher who got her husband to make the ring, and another silver ring another teacher made me just so I wouldn't forget her. Obviously, my host community was pretty generous.
So far, I"m only about 10 months in, but my host sister who is 12 made me a small rug. It's made from scraps of fabric on a loom that she fashioned out of a woven plastic bag. It's really adorable.
Last year the staff at my school in Namibia did a "Secret Santa" gift exchange. My colleague gave me this picture of lions that I think was intended to appeal to tourists, it's kind of glittery and vaguely tacky...of course I thanked her profusely, but what I was really excited about was the bath towel she wrapped it in to keep the frame from breaking! It's the thought that counts, but sometimes for a PCV a practical gift is the best!
