Speculation on oil markets certainly happens and is probably contributing to the high price of oil. I wouldn't disagree with that. But it's not the main cause and if the practise was banned tomorrow we wouldn't magically return to $30/barrel oil overnight. But I suppose it's fashionable at the moment to blame financiers for every woe; certainly it's easier to hate a person than accept the hard physical reality of dwindling resources.

Humans are stupid animals. We are. Its what we do.

I'm looking forward to the population undergoing 3-4 months of overall unemployment, what I call "hitting bottom", before admitting to themselves they have to get new standards, based on 3rd world compromises, and work their way out of the hole. Nothing short of Hitting Bottom is going to make these idiots eat their crow pie and realize the party is over. Nothing less. The saddest part is that people who somehow get through Hitting Bottom without making the actual self-assessment are going to be hated by everyone else because they'll remain snobs and end up 2nd class citizens in the real world. The rest of us who survive the situation are going to be way more selfless and way more connected to our neighbors than previously.
