You do realize that both alcohol and cigarettes are drugs. Our society has allowed people to forget that, and make it easier for them to accept drinking and smoking.

I'm not going to say that drinking is a bad as smoking, but it's not that great either. Alcohol is a toxin (your liver has to filter it out of your body), too much of it poisons you. It's harder to die form alcohol, but the alcohol manufacturers are doing things similar to cigarette manufacturers where they are harming the health of their consumers (and I don't mean because you mgiht do somethign stupid while drunk, I mean because alcohol is a toxin).

Again, you're not really taking my message to heart here. I'm not arguing that these things aren't bad for you physically. They are. But what I am saying is that you should focus on the person and not what they do.

In addition, I want to clarify the statement you're calling into question. I'm speaking on a personal level. I believe that smoking and doing marijuana or any other "drugs" is worse than drinking, but that comes simply from my personal morals. Your morals may be different, and I am okay with that.

im confused as to how that's an issue of morals

I don't think most people are against alcohol, nor what you're discussing, the responsible, ocassional drinker ( ... )

You go to school in the south now. Get used to it.

Just kidding. Even Michigan has had an alcohol related shooting and stabbing.

you got it right ben :)

it's crazy to harp on trying to figure out how to break the law just for the sake of a little booze...is that worth compromising a lot of other things?

I agree. Drinking in moderation is fine. What bothers me is that people have no qualms eating double bacon cheeseburgers or chili hot dogs in their systems, and downing it with Gatorade and soda, but they are quick to criticize those who drink. At least wine has natural ingredients.

Alcohol is mind-altering, those other things are not.

Alcohol is mind-altering if the drinker isn't responsible and has too much. Sleep deprivation could be considered mind-altering; no person is his right mind when he stays up too late.

What about second-hand smoke? Isn't that detrimental as well?

Drink responsibly, eat responsibly. You can't deny that eating a corn dog or cheese fries or a steak is any good for the body. And do you know that a venti frap from Starbucks has more calories than a hamburger from Burger King? Sip on that.

No, any amount of alcohol is mind altering. It blocks receptors in neural pathways. I don't think second-hand smoke is mind altering (I don't think there's any nicotine in it), but it's hell for your lungs ( ... )

Really aside from popularity of one activity over the other whats the real difference?

They both fall under the "Hey lets impair our senses and see what happens catagory".

i'm not patronizing anyone...i respect people's rights to make their own decisions...drinking is just a decision i choose not to make. and i have tons of friends who drink, so that totally doesn't stand in my way. but i have every right to call anyone out on it, especially when it's usually for their own good. also, i can vent my frustration just as easily as you can...even if it's on the opposite side ( ... )

To add on to that, I think there is also a difference between drinking alcohol, being tipsy, being drunk, being "gone" (as my friend says), and puking. I try to stop at #3, and certainly don't ever want to get as far as #5.

But overall, I also feel like I can still laugh at myself in any setting, but it can be fun to do so while drinking as well, at least for me. I laugh at myself all the time, and I don't need alcohol to be able to do that.

also, there's a difference between drinking and getting drunk. i'm not against drinking alcohol...if there's a drink i like, i'll have it. i just think drinking for the purpose of getting drunk is what's stupid.

agreed!
