So I've already had half of one strand of lights go out on the Christmas tree. I replaced the offending bulbs (more than 40) and was quite pleased with myself

Ugh I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago with our pre-lit tree. I replaced the bulbs probably four times, then just chucked the stupid thing and got a different one.
Now we have another pre-lit but this one has a warranty that says it won't burn out or they'll replace it.
I'm hoping it won't come to that, but considering the number of bulbs I had to replace last year, combined with the bulbs this year that might be what has to happen. I want to test a theory next year before doing anything though. We've had the tree since Christmas 2003 and never had problems with this many bulbs going out until the last two years when it has been plugged into an automatic timer.
