I find that knowing the characters and knowing their context will lead to interesting things - just let them do what they're inclined! It may surprise, but hopefully it will be good surprises. :)

Don't you love it when you have this brilliant idea and your characters are like, "Nooooooope. Up yours. I'd rather play TENNIS. Your ideas are lame. Tennis is awesome." Or something like that.

I listen to this podcast by an author who claims that doesn't happen, characters steering your story a different way, you just get new ideas or change your plot, but I think that is BULL.
