Your Fannish Doppelganger?

Mar 08, 2016 20:23

What characters in your fandoms do you most identify with? Do these characters wind up being your favorites, or are you more drawn to characters that are your opposite? Or perhaps there's no relationship at all?

I passed out last night and didn't get to actually respond to this, and now I have to run to work, but -- I don't think the ones I identify with (in this sense I mean "the ones in which I see myself") are the ones I generally favour. I usually have this weird vaguely uncomfortable moment of "oh ouch I know that feel" (usually when someone is freaking out, lol) that makes me feel connected to a character, but it doesn't always translate to that character being the one who makes me roll on the carpet ( ... )

Yah, ok, that's what I was trying to ask.

I can look at characters and then email a friend going YOU MUST WATCH THIS, CHARACTER X IS YOU and then they watch and go whoaaaa you're right!! So maybe people reading this can go "duh Lora you're dumb, Character Y is clearly you!"

Ha! And now I have to go look for these...

(I love how a four paragraph reply is your version of 'I really don't have time to answer, but--')

Hmm. I'm not sure I ever actually identify with any particular character in that I see myself in them? I haven, however, discovered over the years that I'm drawn to a particular type of character: damaged, loves deeply and selflessly, willing to do anything - even to committing crimes - to help or protect the ones they love, sometimes obsessive.

My favorites are John Crichton, Finnick Odair, Johanna Mason, Fox Mulder, Kara Thrace, Haymitch Abernathy, Karl (Helo) Agathon, Max Rockatansky...

That was what I had meant (before I understood that I used 'identify' in the wrong way).

My experience is like yours, I think. I have a 'type' of character that I am repeatedly (though not exclusively) drawn to, but it's not like me, really, and I was wondering if other people experienced the same thing. My biggest 'type' is characters who are on a redemption path, or otherwise experience a deep temptation to do the wrong thing but, in the end, eventually do the right one (or the sacrificial one): Severus Snape, Haymitch Abernathy, Kara Thrace (!), John Locke, etc. This character path, while I find it really admirable and it clearly resonates with me in a big way, it's not something I relate to really? Which seems odd to me, hence the question.

Thanks for sharing your view with me. :) Hope the writing unblocks soon!

I absolutely have types. 100%. Actually, ha! it's kind of like how I write my D2 mentors? Each mentor has a usual sort of type they go for, and sometimes they see themselves in the kids they choose, sometimes they don't, but it's not a deciding factor.

I don't have A type though, I have several. And I'm pretty sure everyone knows because people tag me in things all the time like OH LOOK FOR YOU :D

So I was going to say I'm like Lora in that I don't need Me On Screen and just have bits everywhere and etc etc etc....

And then I realized: Rey.

I literally stopped breathing when we met Rey.

Rey is Like Me. And holy fucking shitballs batman, was that amazing to see.

I probably have more to say about this but I need to go sleep and also to not forget to say that part so.

REY.

OK let me try to deconstruct this because I am pretty bad at understanding feelings and where they come from (https://paperairplanerace.tumblr.com/post/138283150726/rubyetc-good-is-me-thanks-lora... )

I actually have been thinking about this for a few days now and I still have no idea who my Me In Fandom is.

I definitely have types when it comes to characters I like - I like earnest boys and bad girls, and if there's a nerd who isn't a Stereotypical Nerd I like them a lot (Reyyy), and I dislike the ones that follow the rules all the time, but none of them are exactly like me. But it could also definitely be a personal blind spot thing.
