Obligatory end-of-year survey

Dec 30, 2010 02:38

What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Lived somewhere outside the Tri-State area (Philly doesn't count because I don't exactly remember it); interned for the FCC; got straight A's (might've done this in high school one quarter -- or just missed it); attended (multiple!) Congressional hearings; visited Atlanta; contracted mono; was a maid of honor in a wedding; permanently straightened my hair; beat up a total stranger; attend my 10-year high school reunion; saw fireworks on the Washington Mall; ran the entire Central Park reservoir without stopping.

Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
According to this same survey at this time last year, I didn't make any. And apparently I said the same thing , as well. New Year's Resolutions don't work, anyway. I think I'll wait until two weeks into January when everyone's broken theirs to decide what I resolve to do the following year.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
My cousin had a baby in March.

Did anyone close to you die?
No one I can think of at the moment, thank God. Though I was kind of sad to hear of Bob Feller's passing, having met him two years ago in Cleveland.

What places did you visit?
Atlanta, Philadelphia (if "staying with your sister to take the MPRE" counts), Washington DC (in October, for the Sanity Rally)

What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Total confidence in myself (snugglebunnyjm, word-for-word what I would've said), but I'd also add motivation not to procrastinate things that really need to get done.

What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory?
January 10 -- Douchebaggy Ex takes first douchebaggy steps, and it's all downhill from there
May 31 -- I move to DC; gonna make it after all!
June 1 -- First day at FCC
June 12 -- THE WALK! 10
July 4 -- Sick with the summer flu, I muster up the strength to head out to the Washington Mall to see fireworks
August 6-8 -- SABR Atlanta; good times
August 22 -- Mandy's first Yankee game; I conceal the first signs of what turns out to be mono and wrecks me for the semester
October 29-31 -- Sanity Rally/Halloween in DC with Judith, Erin, and Jill. Good times.
November 6 -- Hellacious MPRE day, followed by debaucherous bachelorette party
November 9 -- "Sanity Day"
November 12 -- First near-all-nighter of law school finishing case comment, followed by Sports Law Symposium
November 21 -- Jody's wedding

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Definitely the whole moving-to-DC-for-the-summer thing. Completely out of my comfort zone. Close second would probably be making Law Review.

What was your biggest failure?
Not being able to let go, and letting myself play too many mindgames with myself, which often hindered me from accomplishing things or simply just enjoying life.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Oh my, don't get me started. Because God was really trying to smote me this year -- stomach virus in March; two-week summer flu followed by sinus infection in July; mono in August/September. And a bunch of colds/viruses. Then there was that nasty scrape taking up half my leg from falling in the street on the way to my internship this summer. And the chipped tooth (that kind of just happened one day without my own doing).

What was the best thing you bought?
I'll go symbolic, for lack of anything coming to me off the top of my head. SmarTrip Card I bought as a frequent rider of the DC Metro.

Whose behavior merited celebration?
U.S. Congress, for actually getting stuff done this year! (DADT, 9/11 Bill, Health Care...)

Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
A certain douchebaggy ex -- whom I haven't heard from in over 11 months, but whose behavior in January is responsible for much of my being appalled and depressed this year.

Where did most of your money go?
Rent, as usual, but in multiple locations this year. Followed by public transportation, same.

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Definitely the whole FCC internship/DC thing.

What song(s) will always remind you of 2010?
"Heads Will Roll" by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs; "Wish I Could Forget" (or anything else) by The Weepies; "Teen For God" by Dar Williams (oddly the song I listened to over and over again after the breakup -- still can't explain the association)

Compared to this time last year, are you:

Happier or sadder?
Hard to say. I've been tested a lot this year, in just about everything. It's kind of been one of these years of extreme cosinewave highs and lows, but the highs weren't so high, and the lows felt unbearable. So does that make me sadder? Perhaps. But on the other hand, maybe happier knowing "what won't kill me makes me stronger." Not that I'm sure I could go through any of that again.

Thinner or fatter?
A month or so ago, the answer was definitely thinner, but my diet's been horrid this semester, so I've probably gained back most (if not all) of the mono weight I lost.

Richer or poorer?
Poorer -- the student loan debt grows larger by the second. Oy.

What do you wish you'd done more of?
Seeing/talking to friends, writing

What do you wish you'd done less of?
Worrying, eating, sulking, COMPLAINING, surfing the 'net

How will you be spending New Year's?
Outside of New York/New Jersey for the first time in my life.

Did you fall in love in 2010?
No, but I definitely fell out of it.

What was your favorite TV program?
30 Rock -- it's about all I really watched this year consistently (after I soured on Glee).

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Loaded question. Plead the Fifth.

Do you like anyone now that you hated this time last year?
Usually to "hate" someone, there's a strong reason. So it doesn't often go the other way.

What was the best book you read?
Hmmm... probably Running With Scissors. That's one funny, messed-up book.

What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Weepies

What did you want and get?
An awesome internship this summer.

What did you want and not get?
An awesome internship next summer.

What was your favorite film this year?
Didn't see too much this year in the theater. Either Avatar (which I didn't see for the first time until June), or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.

What did you do on your birthday?
Brought in donuts for my cointerns/supervisors/colleagues(?) at the FCC, then in the evening went with Miriam to Nationals Park to see the Democrats pound the Republicans at the annual Congressional baseball game.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not getting mono and being able to maintain some sense of normalcy in my life -- because I was pretty much running on empty (figuratively) from October through final exams, and literally not running for over a month (meaning I'll have to start from scratch when the weather begins to warm up. :( )

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
A little more in tune with what people are wearing. I now own boots that fit over my pants, skinny jeans (that look good on me), and a sort of quasi-jeggings (before I even knew they were The New Thing). All of which I looked incredible in c. October when I was emaciated by mono and nearly down a pants size, but now look only good in.

What kept you sane?
You guys, when I spoke to you, which I didn't enough, which is maybe what drove me insane most of the year.

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I kind of went through a brief Michael Biehn phase after seeing The Terminator on the big screen in April. That's all I can think of.

What political issue stirred you the most?
D Block, which was kind of my summer. Maybe Net Neutrality, too.

Who did you miss?
Everyone in New York when I was in DC; the few friends I had in DC when I came back; sbolger17 since she packed up and moved to the great white north.

Who was the best new person you met?
The few friends I made in DC, definitely.

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
This, too, shall pass.

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"Hey little train, wait for me / I was held in chains, but now I'm free /I'm hanging in there, don't you see / In this process of elimination ..."
