Older and wiser -- sometimes

The ex showed up at Shabbat services tonight. I knew it was only a matter of time. But it's the first time since that I've seen him anywhere. And what happened was ultimately anticlimaxic -- I kept my distance, and he didn't approach me. Though I did catch him staring at me briefly (I think) from across the room. Good for you in dealing with the ex sighting the way you should have.

And have I told you my favorite lawyer joke?

Making partner is like winning a pie eating contest where the prize is more pie.

Reading your posts recently, I'm starting to get a sense that the whole pursuit is like that. Good luck with Law Review: you deserve to be on the executive board, and I hope whomever is in charge of picking you can recognize that.

Haha, yes, I've heard that one before, just replace "making partner" with "law school." As I understand it, once you make partner, you have a *little* more freedom -- in that you can kind of choose what you want to do and when -- than you do as a first- or second-year associate in a big firm, a job you only get by finishing at the top of your class or graduating from Yale. Mmmm pie.

When I was nannying, the mom made partner after I was there for about a year. She had been getting home between 7:30 and 8, from her office 20 blocks away. After she made partner, I wouldn't see her at all: the dad, a psychiatrist with evening appointments, would always get home first, and then shake his head when he saw me still there. One time she called at 8pm to ask me a pop culture question or something; it was obvious she had no idea what time it was, or that 8pm was supposed to be the absolute latest I should work.

So, yes. Pie. Delicious.

Thanks! In hindsight, I still feel really good about it (except the happy hour stuff).

Woo hoo! Good job with the ex.

And good luck with the Law Review e-board; your experience should definitely put you on there!
