The nestlings have hatched!
The day after my previous entry, all was quiet in the ash tree. The branch sheltering the robins' nest overhangs one of our garden sheds; standing at one corner, I can look up at the bottom of the branch and see some of the underside of the nest. Robin Nest Update
I was beginning to wonder if I had missed the show with this nest, as there seemed to be no action whatsoever--I would expect the birds to be discreet about coming and going, so as not to alert predators, but thought any eggs would have hatched by now, yes ( Read more... ) -
Rain or not?
The weather's been inconveniently unsettled this week. Got mostly through the job of weeding out all the wood sorrel in a too-lightly-mulched bed on Sunday, before a thunderclap shook the ground and scared me indoors. Hot enough for youse?
I've decided New England is all about weather extremes. It was 94 degrees in the backyard when I came upstairs. It won't last long, this time of year, and perhaps will warm the soil up a bit more, so when I get around to sowing sunflower seeds, they won't perish of hypothermia.

A garden walkabout
"Walkabout" is the term used when the Queen of England gets out of her Rolls and meets her subjects, shaking hands and perhaps exchanging a word or two with people along the front of the line. Fast away November passes, fa la la!
Much of the last 8 weeks have been devoted either to garden work or--lately--moving my center of operations from the larger to the smaller of the two non-master bedrooms in the main part of the house--to the bedroom my son occupied while he lived at home. Heat wave over?
When I came down from my pre-work nap (superfluous--not enough babies tonight so I'm just on call), Norm had opened the windows and turned on the fans. Lovely fresh cool air! -
The invasives are here!
Most gardeners have heard about invasive plants--non-native species that escape cultivation and run wild in an ecosystem that has no natural predators to keep it in check, or sometimes natives that spread beyond their range and cause trouble for similar reasons ( Read more... )
