Spider lovers of the world, don't hate me...

May 14, 2004 12:04

I just did battle with the nastiest spider I have seen in a long time. I always go to the front window to pluck my eyebrows (sunlight is key). I stand by the front door which has a venetian blind on it. Well, as I am standing there (cue scary movie music) I see the shadow of a spider behind the blind ( Read more... )

Unless you're on safari on a hot continent, I guess you're not in danger to get bitten by anything poisoned.

Ahhh - you are probably right. And I most likely have used this excuse to exterminate them without guilt! However, I have seen (friends and relatives) bites that not only have made them really sick for a while, but have had lasting health consequences. No thanks.

There are some nasty poisonous spiders that thrive among "civilized" cities. The Brown Recluse is a spider indigenous to South Texas, so be mindful.

Oh yes... the lovely brown recluse. I am always vigilant about insects. If I so much as SUSPECT a bug in my presence, I get all super-adrenaline-aware.

I love ants too, and it is really sad to have to kill them. They are soooooo harmless, but unfortunately when they are overwhelming your kitchen, there isn't much you can do. Every other insect better watch the fuck out. They are going down without mercy. Dude, the thought of this fucking spider on me as I sleep - unbearable.

Well, I HATE ants. In San Antonio (and south Texas) there are big Texas fire ants and they're some mean bastards.

I remember when I lived in Georgia as a little girl we had these ants out in the fields called "red velvet" ants... which I realize now are not actually ants. Icky.

I hate bugs too, but I can't kill them. The crunch and the sound of their yellowed guts squishing out and the thought of the gut juice getting on my shoe or even a millimeter away from my hand (via some paper product) just fucking grosses me out more than the actual bug does.

My method is to scream like a little girl while running in place very fast and waving my arms around like a maniac. All in the hopes that someone will come to my rescue or that the bug will become just as afraid of me as I am of it and run away.

You should have seen me. Got both cats downstairs and then did battle, all the while talking to it like it could hear me and every now and then squealing loudly if it moved too quickly. However, I did dump half a can of pesticide on it, with which I have probably given myself cancer. The fumes are shitty - but when you are a coward, this is the only way you can kill without getting too close.

I have decided it was most likely a jumping spider... the web gave me detailed pics that most closely resemble this spider and it is a common house spider. Also, I should have known... jumping spiders are pretty much my arch nemesis and have been haunting me my entire life... I fucking hate them and have done battle before with this foe. Until we meet again...

The time of year is off a little. Although if the "black house" spider falls into this category, it could very well have been one of those, from what I have read.
