Wish Versus Wish

May 23, 2013 10:32

I posted about this on Random Fandom Forum, and I figured I better say it here too, just to get it out of the way. I like to keep my thoughts in one place, and on the off chance someone asks about it here. Also, it's a celebratory day, as I just got my print copy of Dead Ever After, which apparently came all the way from the Netherlands. That's ( Read more... )

In terms of parent/child characteristics and relationships - the Copley/Amelia set up is so scarily like stuff I've witnessed recently, it's untrue (and sad)

That is pretty scary stuff. Mr. Minty's parents are much like that - using money to control their kids. Which is why we haven't borrowed money from them for about 15 years. We'd rather go to a charity organisation, who doesn't require you to comply with their bad behaviour.

Cope could have tried being a good father but I suppose that was beyond his reach.

Were we ever told what happened to Amelia`s mother? I suddenly wondered.

Amelia was much hated by Sookie-fans - and understandably so - but I think what she did was not as bad as what some of Sookie`s friends did to her. Amelia wasn`t being selfish, she was being herself, which was being a blabbermouth and a person who thought she knew the answer and had full control of her witchcraft whe she didn`t. Amelia`s biggest flaw was not thinking things through and I can certainly sympathize with that :-D

I think he thought that he could put that to the side, and do "important" things like build his business empire. As a result, he only ever showed up when he needed something.

I believe from memory that Amelia's mother died when she was in her teens. She was much closer to her mother.

I think she is a pretty crappy friend, and I think she'll continue to be about the same level. Sookie won't be able to tell her any secrets at all. But I certainly think that many people have done worse. Amelia has always made assumptions - she gets that same behaviour as Cope at times - that she is entitled to things she really isn't. But she did a bang-up job on the wards.

He wouldn`t be the first parent to think that.

Do yo remember if she got her witchiness from her mother? Is it even hereditary like being a were?

To me there`s a huge difference between being a bad friend because you`re ignorant (or a blabbermouth in this case) and being a bad friend because you`re selfish, like some of Sookie`s other "friends". So Amelia has always been in some kind of a middle-category for me. She was there with Tara up until the later books where Tara was moved to the best category of friends. Pam has also been moved up in my mental categories of Sookie`s friends.

(will I ever learn to not post anonymously?)

No, he wouldn't be the first. Which is sad really. I wonder where these people get this idea from?

Nope, not hereditary. She didn't get it from her mother. I think it might be like the essential spark - just turns up at random.

I suppose my difference in rating them as friends is some of the more selfish people I wouldn't categorise as friends. I would emulate Sookie there and call them "friendly acquaintances" since they're basically users. Both Tara and Pam did really well in the friendship stakes though.

You just like to make work for me. :D

This really clears things up. Cope was so greedy that he even had his driver sell his soul. Who knows what he would have done to his daughter. He claims Love. But he wants his daughter back, now that he realizes she's a powerful witch. He'd want to control her to his definition of father/ daughter relationship.
The CD is some scary magic in the wrong hands.

I shudder to think what would have happened to Amelia if he'd gotten his hands on the cluviel dor. Of course, possibly the only "up" side is that he wasn't directing that at the rest of the world. Who knows what he might have done with it.

And that's a good point - with a powerful witch on his side, serving his needs and doing what she tells him, then that would be the smartest deal ever. Exchange one wish for a superpowered wish that will allow you control over a powerful witch.

I'm surprised Amelia didn't think this when she told her father about the CD. Amelia knew the power the CD has. She knows how her father is. Power hungry.
She sure doesn't think before she speaks.

Sookie will never open up to her again and another person to be on guard around.

Well that's the key persistent issue with Amelia. She doesn't think. She's too busy showing off - like she did with Sookie when they first met, assuming she was blowing someone's mind without taking a step back to think about them.

I think they can be friends with that criteria. Lord knows Sookie couldn't talk about vampire stuff with friends. Or tell human friends about weres and shifters.

It did seem odd to me that he would use a wish for a wish. And it also kind of bothered me that the CD was such a rare item. We already knew that there were very few in existence, it was a fairy love token and a very desirable item. But in DEA I felt repeatedly hit over the head that THIS is the ONLY one left in the WHOLE wide world. (Oh the pressure of using it correctly - so glad Sookie used it well and doesn't have to worry about it anymore!) So yes...dots are now connected - it totally makes sense that he used his measly regular ole wish for a rare super duper mega watt WISH ( ... )

He was thinking straight when he asked for it - although not in the way he asked for it. And as it turned out, by his greed he missed out on both wishes. Whoo - yeah - a lot of pressure to use it right. And I think Sookie did. I'm sure it chaps Cope's arse that it was used on something he sees as so trivial ( ... )
