Well somebody had the idea http://boingboing.net/2014/12/11/hand-illuminated-edition-of-th.html which looks great. I wrote a short story  too, about Anäire, wife of Fingolfin, mother of Fingon and Turgon, grandmother of Idril, hand illuminating a silmarillion. Happy to see I wa not the only one to think about a hand-illuminated book.
