The prices around here are kinda funky. They've been plummeting everywhere except Cheshire County, where things have been slow to sell, but prices have remained kind of stable.
It seems like the really decent places start popping up at around $150,000-$170,000. Anything under that (which is our price range) is a total crapshoot. We really lucked out on this house because it's a short sale, so they were kind of desparate to get any offers they could on the place. It's worth probably around $155,000, but we put in an offer for $140,000.
By the way, Jaffrey is beautiful! I think you guys would totally love it there. Nice, hikeable mountain right in town, several stores but not too commercial, nice people...really cool. Should you ever decide to move the Flateau clan southerly, be sure to check out listings at beangroup.com. They seem to be really up-to-date with everything :-)
Yeah, Long Island is kind of nutso... it's one of the reasons we moved up here, because we were pretty sure we'd be living in Jay's parents' house forever if we stayed. But then again, the cost of living evens things out. Teachers up here don't get paid nearly what they do on Long Island, so housing and other expenses tend to be a little lower...so maybe it's all relative?
Hooray! We are big fans of potential... the driveway in particular has LOTS of potential, lol :-D (Note how they don't actually put any photos of the driveway on the tour, hahah...yeah...it has heaps of potential :)
