Recently, one of my friends posted a poll about LJ wondering about the state of the service. He opined that everyone had forgotten about polls. In the course of answering him I decided that I need to post my comment in my main thread as well in order to reach a bigger audience ( Read more... )

To me Live Journal is still viable and vital as both a place to keep my personal journal and a place to read the journals of others - has been for 20 years and still is. My 'friends' list is full and vibrant and ever changing. I am here every day. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

You're not the LJ police. Just because people use their journals differently than you use yours, it doesn't mean that your way is superior. I have a thriving friends list and most of them, myself included, choose to keep our journals set to friends only. I like to control who can read my entries and I regularly get 10+ comments on my friends only entries, so having them locked down doesn't change my interaction rates. I'm not a big fan of celebrity gossip either, but ONTD is probably one of the main reasons that LJ still exists. That group brings a HUGE amount of traffic to LJ on a daily basis. Again, just because it isn't something you like, that doesn't mean it's invalid and a waste of time for someone else.

Amen to that! I guess there has to be one "superior" person in every group, though...

A lot of people no longer regard Livejournal as an independent unbiased platform, so don't use it as their main blog any more. Like many of them I now use Dreamwidth as my primary blog and cross-post here, even though I'm probably not doing anything that would conflict with Livejournal policies, because that's where most of my friends are now. I'm also using my account here for photo hosting (since most of the free photo sites are gone, and 1GB can store quite a lot of small pictures). I still read Livejournal and comment here if someone doesn't cross-post, but as you say the numbers are getting smaller. I really doubt that there is much to be done about it.

Yes, precisely. This was always going to happen once the platform left American ownership. No on is willing to post anything that might have negative repercussions for them.

Frankly I prefer LJ over Dreamwidth. I find it to be more comfortable and that it has more content. I waver between letting my DW account die or keeping it around in case LJ dies. But if I check my DW account once a week, that's a lot. I check LJ a couple of times a day.

I find that I am doing the same thing, I just can't connect on DW and I don't know why.
