This essay should be entitled, "What do YOU carry in your pockets to work?" If you read it all, you get an internet gold star and a hug. And maybe you'll post what you carry in your pockets
( Read more... )
When I was working, I didn't so much do that with pockets, but my drawers had bits and pieces in like that. I always had painkillers, feminine sanitary items, spare plastic cutlery, anything that I might have had need of at one point, and knew I would either need, or someone else would.
And when I had a job involving ripping open boxes? I'd have a knife in my pocket. The supermarket that I worked at though? Wouldn't let us have anything on the tills.
I don't see it as being OCD. I see it as helping things to run smoothly. I've learned it's useful to be useful.
(smiles) Maybe it does have something to do with age. (I'll be 42 by the end of the year) Most of the younger kids don't seem to think much about it, certainly. Or they tend to be shocked on some level that I have these things on hand regularly. (shrugs)
Nothing special-wallet, keys and cell phone. I carry the minimum as it is inconvenient to carry more through the security screening stations at work. When in the office, I carry a second keychain with keys to the storage units and filing cabinets in my work area. Due to the nature of the contents, the file cabinets are always locked unless I need an item from them (or my backup clerk as well). My workstation does have a vast array of materials-innumerable blank forms for various purposes, various stamps (three stamp racks full), a ruler, scissors, various manuels and binders. Any form I might need is within reach and I have numerous trays for papers. I have two number stampers and assorted supplies in addition to my computer terminal and manual typewriter. I also have three coffee mugs. silverware and a thermos tucked away for the cold winter days.
