Now I want to hear the story of how Padawan Qui-Gon almost ended up married to the Queen of Kenyon, and how Master Dooku extricated him from that perilous bind!

I'm not sure of the details, but Dooku was most indignant.

*chuckle*

The young Padawan is hardly learning the appropriate measure of reverent respect for his elders, is he?

Well, I wasn't expecting to see you here.... :) Thanks for reading.

Ah, the hazards of mentorship by those who challenge authority. *g*

You're welcome! I am a keen reader of SF, though I haven't read much in the Star Wars series. I did enjoy, many years ago, Splinter of the Mind's Eye.

To whom do I owe thanks for the introduction?

Ah, the hazards of mentorship by those who challenge authority. *g*

Yes, indeed. There are several layers of authority being challenged, from faily lightweight personal contests of will and "I want it now!" demands, all the way up to the authority of the Force itself.

Some of that authority is good, and some very wrong, as is eventually shown.

Sometimes it seems that young folks are inclined to challenge authority just because it's there, whether wrong or right. ];-)

I do a bit of dabbling in the fiction world as well; this isn't quite a typical fugitive chase, for example.

I'm very... haphazard in terms of reading the EU, might be the best way to put it. I think I enjoyed Splinter too. Having come in late, I found it pretty interesting to read something from before even ESB....

I've been lurking for a bit and am no longer quite sure. I probably hopped over from your comments to either jordan179 or johncwright, where I also lurk intermittently.

Some of that authority is good, and some very wrong, as is eventually shown.

And one thing that will be addressed briefly (or as briefly as certain parties' long-windedness would permit) in the next chapter is that some of the layers are the results of compromises between competing goods. I think this is strongly suggested in the movies, and I understand it shows up more explicitly in some of the EU works that I haven't actually read -- actually in ones where the authors were scrambling to try to fit what they'd previously guessed about the Jedi with what they were shown in the prequels. Also the thousand years line vs. the thousand ( ... )

I love the interplay between Dooku and Qui-Gon. These are obviously two men who care a great deal for each other, and it shows. Please tell me Qui-Gon isn't fated to die as he did in TPM! (Or wait, don't tell me, as I do not want to be spoiled.) Anyway, I am anxious to see what events are changed by Dooku's Force-inspired decision to take Anakin as his Padawan. Keep up the great writing!
