I think he has potential in staying a while. It's getting towards the end (I hope not) and maybe he's starting to feel it. And it's showing. I'll give him a chance first before making a final judgment.

If you think the BBC is going to stop the show after 13 actors in the lead role, you're wildly mistaken. It's an international cash cow! And besides, there's precedent for a Time Lord to have more than 13 incarnations - check the Master's backstory.

Oh, I've read the Master's history. But it would be interesting to see how they work around that since it was the Time Lords who gave the Master the extra lives, if I got that right. And I do have to agree that the BBC won't stop the show after 13 actors. Definitely an international cash cow!

Magic TARDIS dust - same stuff as brought Eight's companions back to life in the TVM.

I'm kind of excited. Also wondering if they'll go darker, although Matt's Doctor was pretty dark. I haven't seen Capaldi in much more than you, so it'll be interesting.

I confess, at this moment, I've no interest in what they'll do with him. It seems a long way off.

Interesting. I know his name, I remember him in "Fires of Pompeii"... but a previous performance won't necessarily indicate how he'll act the Doctor, true. (Perhaps his role in The Thick of It had something to do with his being offered the role, though? In that case, I should probably check it.) I'm interested that they've cast an older actor. I'm sure they can get past the 12 regenerations/13 lives limit from Classic Who.

[ETA: Ah! Not only was he in The Hour, which I have on my list to investigate, but he was in a movie I loved years ago, Local Hero. I'm going to track that down, as I'd love to see it again, and see him in it, knowing who he is now.]

From what I've heard of 'In The Thick of It', I've no desire to see that show.

Agreed, now that I know how crude it was. I do want to try The Hour, though, partly because someone I know loved it dearly and was sad when it was canceled.

I don't know what The Hour is about - and apparently am too lazy (or do I mean uninterested?) to find out!

If you haven't seen Capaldi before, I strongly recommend the BBC adaptations of The Crow Road and Neverwhere.

(I never liked The Thick of It personally, and I doubt Malcom Tucker is going to give much of an idea of how he'll play the Doctor anyway.)

I can't say I'm in any desperate hurry to watch him in anything else. After all, what he's done before isn't very likely to be a strong indicator of how he'll play the Doctor.

Couldn't be happier that they picked Peter Capaldi. Go and watch The Hour if you've not already. He's not in the first series (but watch it anyway because it's fantastic and you need the backstory), but he was fabulous in the second. One particular 2-minute sequence toward the end absolutely blew me away. Been a fan ever since.

And really, I'm not at all surprised that Moff went with someone older. I've said all along that he's been pulling things back in a more old-school direction, and an older Doctor is definitely old-school. And overdue, honestly. I can't wait to see how this is all going to turn out.

Oh, he was also in The Hour? I know someone who dearly loved that series, but I haven't seen it yet, so time for me to stop stop stalling and get the DVDs, hah.

I've liked Matt Smith as the Doctor more than Moff as showrunner, but have liked that Moff has given New Who more of a taste of Classic. I look forward to seeing how Capaldi turns out.

He was very much in The Hour. I highly recommend checking it out. Fabulous series that should have had one more but was cancelled, much to the chagrin of its fans. But perhaps that's part of why PC is available now...

I'm much too tired, and it's much too far away, for me to get excited about it yet.
