The details melt away, the nails that once held them in place jutting awkwardly from the wall.

I'm sure you've had one of those experiences where the more you pay attention to the object of the activity, the more vague everything else around you becomes, until it's almost like there's a bunch of stage flats back there that are slowly being dragged out of the house lights? It's kind of like that.
Just that singularity that can exist between two living things, blotting out (erasing) all else from the mind's eye.

Most definitely. I can actually think of several types of circumstances in which I've had that happen....often associated with some type of intimate (and not just sexual) activity or interaction.

I've also had the inverse, where I get so detached from the object of activity that it fades into little more than a flickering and almost a white noise as my attention diffuses elsewhere.

Absolutely, although that's been a bit more rare for me.
Some of the things I can phase out on: any strong emotional intimacy, music, driving, rock climbing, a really good video game or movie, playing with my ferrets (although I guess that falls into emotional intimacy), yoga, rain and snow, sunlight... the list goes on and on. Good stuff, man.
I get my meditation in whatever form it comes to me.
