UNDAPANTS

Dec 20, 2006 06:24

Despite an evolving hate relationship with my last exam this semester, it's been a fun class. One of the take-home essays I have written is about underwear. I have about two pages, single-spaced, of women's underwear. I feel somewhat like a monster... I just can't stop writing.

But here are some fun cartoons about foundation garments. )

Dear Maureen,
You are awesome as well and I miss you. I am sad that you didn't see SK, but then again you also missed being evacuated from the 9:30 Club so as not to die in flames a la Great White fans. I was thinking about this and about crinolines at the same time, and it occurred to me that it's really good that no one wears crinolines anymore, because it would be hard for hundreds of girls in crinolines to quickly leave a club, and also they would be very flammable, and also I don't know how anyone tolerated Washington heat in the summer before the era of tank tops and short skirts.

But anyway. If you are going to be in NoVa one of these days, let me know. I'm usually around.

Speaking of crinolines and flames... If you ever come across a museum exhibit of such dresses (they're kind of Civil War-era), be wary of the ones that are backed up to a wall. Since the girls really had no way of telling what their dresses where doing all the time, they could accidentally back up too close to the fireplace. Whoosh.

I imagine wearing one could have rather good ventilation if you didn't have to deal with any other undapants.

I've thought about this whole burn issue, and the reason I have is that I've seen the Winona Ryder version of Little Women approximately a zillion times (have been madly in love with Christian Bale since I was 9 or 10). Jo has a big burn spot on her only good dress, and she has to wear it to the party anyway because she has nothing else to wear, so she spends the whole party standing against a wall hoping nobody will see it, but then Laurie finds her and they sneak off into some back room and dance, and she makes him promise that he won't look at the back of her dress, but then he does anyway. It's so adorable.

I am such a dork.

I'm adding that to my list of movies I want to watch merely for the costumes. The fashion/costume prof gave a lot of good recommendations... It seems that the Geology, History, and Theatre departments have the nicest people.
