Recs: Sherlock/John

Apr 06, 2012 19:33

This is a little list I like to call "Things For The BBC Sherlock Fandom That I Have Read And Liked Very Much!"

I hope you like them, too.  <3

Notes:  All recs are either Johnlock or gen.  May have other side pairings.  Summaries from the authors themselves are in italics.  Arranged alphabetically by author, then in whatever order I happen to put them in (I do try to keep series together, though).  Last updated Saturday, December 8th, 2012, but I'm probably going to be adding to this list constantly as I find new things I like-- if you've run out of stuff to read then it's always worth checking back!

Breakfast at 221B
by AJHall
{ T | 2,900 | S/J }
In which there is a frank conversation about Mycroft’s sexual proclivities, a spot of cuddling, and one decidedly liberated cormorant.

If Metal Had a Choice
by anarmydoctor
{ M | 2,100 | S/J }
Sherlock has his heart in the throat when he says Take my hand, and the metal of their handcuffs shines proud and thankful, because that’s the instant, that’s the second, that’s the reason why if metal had a choice, its choice would be now and here.

First Response

by ArwenKenobi
{ T | 13,200 | gen }
Five times John had to perform first aid on Sherlock and one time Sherlock had to perform it on John.

Equilibrium
by augustbird
{ M | 12,400 | S/J }
At Baskerville, John is infected by a virus that turns him into a genius.  But when the infection progresses into neurodegeneration, it's a race against time to save himself.

Subtleties That We Are Not Aware Of
by belovedmuerto
{ T | 1,700 | S/J }
An utterly gorgeous, heartrending fic centered around Sherlock and John’s first three kisses.

34 Minutes
by bendingsignpost
{ T | 4,700 | S/J }
An experiment in eye contact.  ...Not only was this absolutely amazing to read, but it also really, really makes me want to run a similar study myself.

Cooperative Principle
by bendingsignpost
{ M | 56,000 | S/J }
Lots of angst and porn.  This is one of my absolute favourites because it's just so realistic.  Of course they're going to bicker and argue.  Of course John is going to have issues and Sherlock is going to deal with them in the most brash (if well-intentioned) way possible.  Brilliant.  Communication is so important in a relationship, you guys.

Stairway To Heaven
by bendingsignpost and PrettyArbitrary
{ T | 14,400 | S/J }
There are two parts to this fic, one written by each author.  Together, they make up the story of how John and Sherlock's lives end, and their reconciliation on the other side.

Apologies for Large Feet
by BlackEyedGirl
{ T | 3,200 | S/J }
Sherlock's anomalous ways of thinking can get him into trouble sometimes.  A beautiful little pre-slash piece about how John makes Sherlock's life a little more... good, if significantly more confusing.

Mental
by Boeshane42
{ M | 18,100 | S/J }
Sherlock Holmes is a patient in a closed psychiatric ward.  John Watson is his new psychiatrist.  Without spoiling too much... nothing in this story turned out at all like I expected, and I loved that about it.  Definitely read this if you like mystery/case fics.
Workaround
by Calico
{ M | 4,800 | S/J }
The author says that this is "business as usual, really," but oh dear, this is very much not business as usual, it is brilliant and sexy and I've never seen anything like it before.  Go read it now.

Not Waving But Drowning
by caoine
{ M | 6,300 | S/J }
In which there is a glove, and an elephant, and John is having trouble figuring out what it all means.  (The second I realized what was happening with the elephant, my head exploded because that is so absolutely perfect!)

The Only Emperor
by coloredink
{ G | 12,300 | gen }
It never occurred to Sherlock Holmes that an ice cream shop might attract children.  This is glorious.

Experiments in Living
by definewisdom
{ M | 5,000 | gen }
An incredible insight into Sherlock's character-- it isn't technically canon, but you feel like it should be.  Of all the stories about Sherlock's past that I have seen, this is by far the best.

You've Never Seen The Lonely Me

by elsterhoehle (schwarze_elster)
{ T | 3,800 | gen }
When John gets back from Afghanistan, all he really wants is to have a nice, hot bath.  Maybe that will make him feel sane again.  In reality, things turn out to be a slight bit more complicated.

A Cure For Boredom
by emmagrant01
{ M | 81,700 | S/J }
Sherlock, through a terribly convoluted series of events, ropes John into a prolonged experiment in which Sherlock catalogues his response to every sort of sexual stimuli you can possibly imagine-- mostly by watching him have sex with other people.  The dynamic between Sherlock and John in this is incredible.  If you're not shy about a little slight kink, I guarantee this will be an amazing read.

The Year That Never Was
by emotionanalysis
{ T | 2,600 | S/J }
What would you do, if you woke up to find that you and your best friend were the only people left on Earth?

Level 65 Paladin Looking For Group
by etothepii
{ T | 10,000 | gen }
Sherlock and John meet playing a MMORPG.  If you're at all into gaming, I could not possibly recommend this fic more.

The Theory of Narrative Causality
by falling_voices
{ M | ??? | S/J }
Technically, this is metafic, but probably not how you're used to seeing it.  (It's also brilliantly orchestrated and a fandom classic!)  Sherlock is a well-known fanartist; John is a BNF fanfic writer.  When they're paired together for the Sherlock Holmes Big Bang, their emergent friendship evolves into something more.
You and I in an Imperfect Place
by guns_and_poses
{ M | 6,300 | S/J }
A roll in the hay.  Pun absolutely intended.

Come Apart At The Seams
by harlequindreaming
{ M | 21,400 | S/J }
Sherlock’s often considered his body and everything else as merely transport for his brain. Then the transport starts to malfunction and everything goes to pieces.  I was falling apart by the end of this.  I could read Alone On The Water and it didn't make me cry, but this one.  Just.  Oh, god.

The Shape I Found You In & sequel Lay Me Down
by irisbleufic and moony
{ M | 24,500 total | S/J }
Sherlock is in Sweden for a case, and while he and John are apart, they both realize their feelings for one another.  The first fic is the correspondence between the two while the case is on, and the second, what happens afterward.  Alternates between somber and silly, sweet and sultry, but always, always beautifully written.

The Progress of Sherlock Holmes
by ivyblossom
{ M | 62,000 | S/J }
Sherlock is head over heels for John, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him.  This is one of those stories that will break your heart and then put it back together again.  Without spoiling too much: John marries Mary, thinking his feelings for Sherlock are unrequited.  They aren't.  Complications ensue.

Man and Beast
by jupiter_ash
{ M | 20,000 | S/J }Sherlock is a werewolf who is captured by a facility which wants to experiment on him.  When John is placed into his cage they expect Sherlock to attack him, but instead, he tries to mate with John.  Mind the warnings.  It's a bit harrowing and dark, particularly in how the scientists treat the both of them, but not overwhelmingly so.  The writer handles Sherlock's contradictory nature beautifully-- all his intellect and self-discipline, constantly at odds with his impulsive, instinctual "wolf" side.  And I love the use of Shakespeare quotations.

Out Looking for Woodlice
by justwolf
{ M | 2,500 | S/J }
Eventually you want someone to know. Eventually you can't deal with only your memory of the marks on your skin. You want someone to say, “That must have hurt.”  Sherlock, in the wake of Sebastian.  This broke my heart a little.  Mind the warnings.

I Can't Lose You Now
by Laurtew
{ T | 6,200 | S/J }
Spoilers for The Reichenbach Fall.  Sherlock has been back for exactly three days before he stumbles upon all the letters John wrote to him while he was gone.

The Velveteen Doctor
by lantean_drift
{ T | 7,400 | S/J }
I cannot possibly hope to sum up how wonderful this fic is in a mere few sentences.  It's touching and sweet and very much them.  Please read it.

A Preference For Texting
by LostGirl
{ T | 7,000 | S/J }
Sherlock and John have some of their most important conversations while texting.  Adorable!

Duvet (green)
by Mazarin221b
{ T | 2,000 | S/J }
Sherlock recalibrates and restructures his mind palace so it looks like 221b. What he chooses to put in John's room is a bit of a surprise, and a revelation.

Of Men And Things
by Mazarin221b
{ T | 4,800 | S/J }
Sherlock keeps an Index, and John discovers that Sherlock's unique way of learning about people isn't as unusual as it seems.

Kissing John Watson
by misslucyjane
{ T | 1,800 | S/J }
Sherlock is new to kissing just for kissing's sake.  Unabashedly fluffy and sweet.
Grey or Blue
by missmelon12
{ M | 4,600 | S/J }
A particularly enjoyable post-case PWP.

A Slowly Dawning Attraction
by Mitsuru Aki
{ T | 13,000 | S/J }
Five times Sherlock and John almost kissed at work, and one time they did.  My god, the tension!  Glorious.

A Thousand Years
by OneWhoSitsWithTurtles
{ G | 2,400 | S/J }
Spoilers for The Reichenbach Fall.  Three years later, Sherlock returns to claim his second chance.

Sink Like a Stone
by pennydreadful
{ T | 4,300 | S/J }
After defeating Moriarty at the pool, life isn't quite the same around 221B Baker Street... it's more peaceful.  And stranger.

Catch as Catch Can
by perevision
{ M | 21,600 | S/J }
John gets fed up with Sherlock's interminable sulking and devises a scavenger hunt to keep him occupied.  It might be the most difficult thing he's ever done.  Or possibly the strangest.  But it will certainly be the most rewarding.

Planet Sherlock
by pir8fancier
{ M | 6,500 | S/J }
John and Sherlock devise a rating system for their sexual encounters.

Pro Bono
by PrettyArbitrary
{ M | 9,300 | S/J }
The first thing you need to know about this is that it is omegaverse.  The second thing you need to know about this is that it is one-hundred-percent consensual, non-angst-dominated omegaverse.  Meaning, explicit relationship negotiation, planning for heats, and just generally none of the creepiness and/or dub-con that tends to permeate the omegaverse as a whole, which is why I love this story so much.  Because if I'm speaking frankly here, some of said creepy things can be fantastic every once in a while, but as kinks they also sometimes horrify me.  Anyway, this fic is gorgeous-- it has all of the wonderful things about this 'verse (like alpha/omega dynamics and fantastic worldbuilding and really, really intense sex), and none of the bad ones, so if you're looking for a decent easing-in to the omegaverse as a whole, this is definitely it.  ...Oh, and the third thing you should know about this is that it has a prequel called Serviceman.  You may want to read that first if you want to understand Sherlock's "harem" comments.

Stringplay
by PrettyArbitrary
{ M | 3,200 | S/J }
John secretly plays fiddle. Sherlock and his violin seduce him into a threesome.
High Adventure
by Random_Nexus
{ M | 16,300 | S/J }
Sherlock ropes John into helping him test a modified anti-anxiety drug he's developing.  Unfortunately (or fortunately) for them both, it does not have the effect that Sherlock originally intended.  Hilarious, smutty, and full of space pirates!

Flashpoint
by roane
{ M | 221 | S/J }
Alive, and burning with it, with the near-kiss of death still at his mouth. One exchanged look, utter clarity. Bodies slamming against a wall, mouths biting.

Perchance to Dream
by roane
{ G | 400 | S/J }
Three times John falls asleep during the cab ride home.  Heartwarming and cute.

Under Control 'verse

by rotaryphones
{ M | 26,800 | S/J }
“You know John, I could hypnotize you if you really want."  What followed was an arrangement that John never thought he would be lucky enough to find, and never insane enough to accept.  John has a hypnosis kink; to his utter befuddlement, Sherlock decides to indulge it.

Obsession, Appassionato
by shinychimera and Yeomanrand
{ M | 4,200 | S/J }
Oooh, I do love a jealous Sherlock!  John is late, and Sherlock is driving himself mad waiting.

New Definitions
by skyremains
{ G | 3,600 | S/J }
Sherlock and John admit how much they need one another in their lives.  You know something?  Smut is great and all, but this is the part I love most about John and Sherlock.  The way they complete one another, on a deeply human, codependent level.  No labels necessary.  Just being close.

Sometimes Lost Is Where You Need To Be
by stardust_made
{ M | 14,600 | S/J }
Oh gods this is lovely!  Another first-kiss-first-time sort of story, in which John is confused and Sherlock eventually deduces why his beloved blogger is not willing to discuss it with him.  If you want to get the full effect of this piece, you should probably read its little prequel story first.

Where The Sun Never Shines

by teahigh
{ T | 11,600 | S/J }
John is a mess. Sherlock can't fix him, but he tries. That's good enough, John thinks.  Post-Reichenbach h/c story.  I can't possibly put words to how eloquently done this is.

There Aren't Enough Scoundrels in Your Life
by theraggedyhipster
{ G | 1,800 | S/J }
THIS.  If you are in need of a cheering-up, or just something sweet and fluffy to make your day, please read this.  It's so sweet, how they learn to communicate just by holding hands.

In Which John Dies
by thequeergiraffe
{ M | 1,200 | S/J }
I expected this one to be a huge pile of angst, but it wasn't, because John doesn't actually die.  (Yay!)  Instead, Sherlock introduces John to the french colloquialism la petite mort.

Empty Houses

by theumbrellaseller
{ T | 7,000 | gen }
"What's on this table is a body, and that body can be useful to me. If it's difficult for you to see, then in the future you can wait outside."  John tries to teach Sherlock about respecting the dead.  Can be read as either Sherlock/John or gen.

The Schedule
by wafflestories
{ T | 2,225 | gen }
Oh, Sherlock.  You are so adorable when you don't want to admit you miss someone.  I'm not really sure whether to call this pre-slash S/J or gen, but either way, Sherlock's outlook on their relationship here is magnificent.

Untenable
by wafflestories
{ T | 6,491 | gen }
Sherlock Holmes Works Alone. This has been known to backfire on him- sometimes badly- but old habits die hard.  In which Sherlock does something very, very Not Good, and for the love of god, if he isn't already dead by the time John gets there he is going to bash the man's bloody head in for this one.

I See You Across The Seas
by wordquandary
{ T | 10,000 | S/J }
John flies off to Australia, and Sherlock suggests they keep in touch via Skype.  They miss each other lots.  Until they don't have to anymore, of course.

The Paradox Suite
by wordstrings
{ M | ??? | S/J }
This is widely considered to be required reading in the Sherlock fandom-- and for good reason.  I wish I could write like this.  Both her Sherlock and her John are absolutely, heartrendingly in-character.  Each and every piece in this series is just... amazing.  Haunting.  Beautiful.  If you haven't already read it, please do.

Really Really Stupid Minifill
by anonymous
{ T | 200 | multi }
Hilarious crackfic!  All the Sherlock characters are different elemental molecules.  Chemistry jokes abound.
Aaaaand there we have it!  :)  Happy reading, you guys!

fic recs, sherlock
