Yeah, I've often thought this. Yes, we could solve the problem by everyone doing their bit but actually achieving that would be like getting all the air in a large box to gather in one corner just by talking to it.
For every person that takes the long view and makes sacrifices for it there will be someone else(more likely several) who will take advantage of them for their own short term gain effectively wiping out what they're trying to achieve.
I'm reminded of the Irish Elk(now extinct) the males grew larger and larger antlers because it made them attractive to the females and so they achieved short term gains. But the ice age was coming and large antlers meant poor heat retention and by then there weren't enough elk with small antlers for the species to survive.
