I've noticed a few people giving summer reading updates, so I thought I'd do the same ( Read more... )

I thought Life of Pi was all right, and Grendel is one of my absolute favorite books.

Excellent! I'm glad to hear all the good reviews of Grendel, now I really can't wait to read it.

I like Life of Pi although I wish it had focused on different things in the end; Grendel's quite fun; not a fan of Safran Foer.

What're your favs? I'll try to think of some good recs.

I find the end of Life of Pi absolutely shocking, I definitely didn't see it coming. What do you think it should have focused on? Also, why don't you like Foer? I thought he had a realy cool style, although maybe it was a little show-offy.

As far as recs go, I'll basically read anything. Do you know if The Alchemist by Coehlo is any good? I seem to be hearing a lot about it lately.

Well, I'm glad you finally read The Iliad! If I had known you hadn't I would have been chiding you right along with Caitlin. Crime and Punishment is one of my favorite Lit Hum books, so I hope you like it. Personally, I can't handle straight philosophy during the summer, so I couldn't do Kant and Nietszche, but good luck with those too. I think you might like Russell. Like I said, her view of history is a little skewed (you'll see what I mean), but it's definitely a book that gets you thinking.

I'd read Children of God, if only because it ends optimistically (unlike the last one). For instance, you find out in the first few chapters that one of the characters you thought was dead actually survived the attack on Rakhat. That was nice.

also, have you read 'the handmaid's tale' by margaret atwood? that was really good too.

Yeah, I read that one a few years ago. I liked it a lot, but it's really the only Atwood book I could dever get into. Everyone always tells me how much I would like Cat's Eye, but no matter how hard I try to give it a chance I can never muster up the interest.

I think I'll also give Children of God a try. I would sort of hope that it would be Anne who survived, because she was my favorite, but that seems rather impossible. Perhaps Sofia? It would be nice if she lived.
