I love how you're developing Jack and Ennis's feelings for each other :) This was a wonderfully sweet chapter. Love their thoughts on each other too :)

Love the gorgeous images of both of them on horseback :) You write that beautifully. What I also really loved was Jack singing, that's so sweet. And aw, how I loved Ennis waking up with Jack in his arms and looking at him the way he did *happy sigh* and I adored him spontaneously running his hands through Jack's hair :) These lines were gorgeous:

He had never seen anyone as handsome as Jack Twist but he knew now that it wasn’t just the twinkling blue eyes or the sparkling smile that made him so. It was those things that you couldn’t see by looking. It was his courage and his kindness and the sweetness that let him share someone else’s burdens and sorrows when he had enough of his own ( ... )

Thanks for the comments as always. I'm glad you liked Jack singing. I debated about whether to include that but as singing to the cattle was a common activity I decided to go ahead.

The boys are in no danger from Charlie. When he said he'd "been cold a time or two himself" he was basically saying that he had indulged in some activity with other men to "stay warm" on occassion and so he wasn't going to judge Ennis for doing the same. He believes what a man does with his pecker (as he put it)is a private matter.

A cavvy is a group of four or five horses that are assigned to each man during the roundup. These are the horses he would switch between so as not to tire any of them too much.

I glad you are continuing to read and still enjoying the story.

The description of the landscape and the work the men are doing is very interesting. I am finding I am enjoying this aspect of the story as much as reading about the slowly developing relationship between Ennis and Jack.

I really like your style of writing.
Thank you
Lorna

Love how you describe the way the roundup goes - about how the ranches work together - how one provided the chuckwagon, how they did the branding, etc. -almost sounds as if you've done it.

Wonder how the two new men are going to play into the story????

Really enjoyed Charlie teasing Ennis - I can just hear Ennis trying to defend himself - it was especially funny when Jack walked upon him and scared him, but it was so nice to see them sharing some "warmth" during the early morning. LOL

Thanks for a wonderful update.

I'm so glad that you liked the descriptions of how the roundup worked and that it sounded authentic. I have never been on a roundup, and the only ranch I've ever been to was the one in Nebraska where I used to go horseback riding when I was a girl. Actually I've been reading a lot on the subject of roundups, cattle drives and general cowboy life for this story and it's quite interesting to me. I'm learning a lot and it's making writing the story more fun.

PetiteMiel, "Return with us to those thrilling days of yesteryear..." Your story takes us into a long ago time where people were really not much different than those of today. Those cowboys have a tough life where they depend on their comrades. And some comrades are much closer than others but must hide their feelings. You have a good description of their lives and work.

thanks

Thanks, I'm really glad that the story has the feel of an Old Western. That was definately my aim.

this is beautiful, Ennis is realizing his feelings towards Jack and Charlie could care less.

I had heard it was not unusual for the guys working ranches to COWBOY up. no one said QUEER or batted an eye (well maybe some but not like a posse would shoot em)

more please

Ennis has become more aware of his attraction for Jack and his affection for him but whether he can handle anything more then remains to be seen. So far he hasn't really encountered a situation he can't ignore or excuse away but something tells me that won't be the case for long.

Charlie has been around for a long time and seen and done a lot too so he's learned to live and let live. Of course not everyone is as easygoing as the grumpy old cook.
