This is one of the most 'beautiful' things I've ever read. What a delicious vision for Ennis to stumble upon:

His eyes washed over Jack’s naked flesh, following the trail of water that slid down his back between his shoulder blades and over the smooth curve of his ass....Ennis’ eyes devoured every inch of him taking in the lean muscles, the flat stomach and what lay below nestled in the thatch of dark hair between his thighs.

This is wonderful -- there are so many great parts to this chapter. You map out the way Ennis' thoughts are travelling so well:

"Maybe he was worrying for nothing. Maybe it was just the newness of having a real friend for the first time that made him feel this way. Maybe the feelings would go away and there’d be no need for such thoughts as these.

'Maybe I’ll sprout wings and fly.' He mumbled to himself shaking his head."

I read this several times, it was so perfect Ennis.

I love the care with which you show us this environment -- the details are amazing!

The little nods to canon are so clever -- much to the amusement of Ennis, Jack can't play horseshoes, of course (what is with that boys aim? they are not going to get in trouble at Evans Peak with Jack having a gun in hand, are they???)

And Ennis' leg bobbing up and down while smoking at wondering where Jack is reminds of him waiting for Jack to drive up to Riverton!

Really wonderful story, thank you!!!

I'm glad you think I captured Ennis in those lines. I think getting a bead on Ennis is a bit harder for me then Jack at times so I'm glad you saw him in this.

Glad you like the little nods to cannon as well.

“Naw Ennis, I couldn’t never ask for nothin’ better. It’s…it’s my best thing, ever.” He whispered.

I really like this story...they are so sweet together! :)

I'm enjoying this so much- not sure if I can explain this properly, but your writing has such a natural rhythm, the words just seem to flow . . . a real pleasure to read. The first paragraph is so lovely - the pale light, the silence, the stillness - you're describing Ennis as well as his surroundings. Love watching the slow but steady progression of their relationship and, dang, those last two paragraphs! :) But here's my favorite line - It’s…it’s my best thing, ever.” So much meaning behind those words! Thanks - Marie

OOOOO Ennis checking naked Jack out! oh no he's not queer. and I know how HARD Ennis is going to try to resist. His close friend is getting closer. You know when Jack had been checking Ennis out after he'd taken a bath I was thinking to myself "When is it going to be Jack's turn in the tub?" I guess he waited until later to get his own bath done.

I love the gift of the carving. I always wished they would have showed off what Ennis carved in the movie.

Love this story, LOVE IT!
