This is really getting me riled up good joetheone May 31 2007, 04:57:39 UTC
I love how Ennis and Jack talked about things and Ennis made the commitment to always be his friend and then seeing how Ennis wanted to go and hurt the man who hurt his Jack. The way Jack gathered his strength and the admiration of his co-workers well most of them surely did help and having that pay in his pocket was a good boost form him as well. I'm nervous at the confrontation with his father but I also think I'm more excited to see what he present he bought for Ennis. Joe

No he did not buy lube.:) Not a lot sold in country stores in 1867.

They do have something amongst their supplies that will serve their needs at a later date though.

Aw, even though it was pretty dangerous I loved Jack teasing poor sweet Ennis at the table! Your Jack is so sweet and adorable. I loved these lines too:

Hell I aint stopped thinkin' on ya for more than a second since I met ya Ennis

I'm glad and relieved they both know each others secrets, especially about Billy.
Loved how proud Jack was of getting paid and loved how he encouraged Ennis to try and read the list :)
I too can't wait to see what Jack bought for Ennis! Squeeee!
I adored these lines, they are beautiful and intense and I'm so so happy Jack is feeling this way, feeling better about himself; stronger and more confident knowing he has Ennis at his side now too. LOVE Ennis for feeling so strongly about Jack's Dad and for wanting to protect Jack from anymore harm

He had always felt so alone, unable to fight back, never strong enough to stand up to the man who had sired him but he wasn’t alone anymore. He wasn’t a scared little kid hiding in closets or under beds to avoid a beating ( ... )

joetheone, big_heart_june Thank you both for the comments.

I think Jack is learning a lot from being around other men and working beside them everyday. He never really had the chance to prove himself before and it is definitely helping to build up his self esteem. He has a life time of ridicule to work against so it won't happen overnight but the experiences he is having now are definitely helping him to see his own self worth.

I truly love this story. You are building trust and confidence in these two young men. They will always have each others back...The honesty they have now given to each other, is a great block on which to make a relationship. I truly understand the fear and trepidation in which you have place Jack in relationship to his father..No matter how many years, or time goes by. How mature you are, or how accomplished you may be. When you encounter some parent that has been like that...You become to a great extent that little child again...If only one could access the inner child of wonder and love as easily, life would truly be a glorious experience. janice

ifyoucantfixit1 Thank you for your thought on this. I agree. I think an adult who suffered abuse over many years as a child will often react as if they are back in that same vulnerable position when confronted with that abusive parent no matter how old they get. It is only by confronting the fear and the pain that you can move on and heal.

Your writing is so consistently excellent - what a pleasure to read. Slowly but surely they are learning to communicate and be honest with each other which is essential because they are going to have to watch each other's backs as well as their own.

“Well I wouldn’t say it was easy but I sure enough read it, didn’t I?” He smiled back." Jack teaching Ennis to read is such a perfect addition to the storyline - and a great lesson in more than just reading. The things in life worth having are worth the effort and are not out of reach.

Didn't expect the ending with Jack's mom and dad showing up. Love seeing how much Jack and Ennis have both grown and strengthened individually since they've met - and how they are growing together as a team.

Thanks - Marie

This is really good chapter. I was happy to see that J&E's friendship is developing and that Ennis has made genuine progress in learning to read. Actually, the literacy rate was fairly high back then, people might not have had as much schooling in some ways but (jmvho) it was a much higher quality. (Sorry, the cynic in me insists on speaking.) I am hoping that Jack's dad doesn't cause too much trouble for him but I am not as worried as I might be, since this time Jack has back-up. I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

mariez65, samtyr I'm glad you liked that Ennis is making progress with his reading. Just my way of making sure he gets some kind of education as I always hated that OS ennis had to leave school so young.

samtyr I would imagine that the ileracy rate was quite high especially in the west where there were fewer established communities and many people learned at home or not at all.
