The trip was great, and crappy, and all the things that a trip would be that involve seeing wonderful family that you haven't seen in 15 years and being welcomed in right away (great), and then going to a funeral for the patriarch of said family (crappy). I am already looking forward to my next visit back there, though.

I'm sorry. I was wondering who died, and couldn't think of a good way to put that, and didn't want to be the first clueless person to post to your journal. I think I kind of just did, though.

It is kind of weird that we'd never see most of our relatives if it weren't for funerals. In my family, anyway.

I'm sorry, though. Was it your grandfather?

Oh, no worries at all - I really didn't walk about it much (a couple of status updates on facebook, pretty much, and even those were vague). It was my uncle Tony, who was married to my dad's sister. Most of my dad's side of the family live within a couple hours of each other in western ND, although there were lots of people on Tony's side of the family that came from all over. They lived in a really small town, and pretty much the entire town came to the funeral.

It's one of those odd family situations where my dad was the youngest by far of his siblings, and so the cousins we visited with felt more like aunts and uncles to us, and our actual aunts and uncles are more like grandparents.

Despite his connection through marriage he even made a strong impression on my parents, who only met him once during our wedding. (I'm pez's hubby, if that wasn't just given away.)

A very awesome man indeed.
