What I've learned in the first two weeks

You can never have too many terry towelling nappies. Half of them went out of circulation immediately to cover any surface B lies on - both my feeding stations, change table, bassinet, carry cot, and a floating one for people's shoulders ( Read more... )

If we actually lived in the same city, we'd come by and demonstrate that we are not at all worried by mess, vagued-out conversation, sudden flashes of boob, etc etc. Been there, done that, still there, still doing it. Your non-enbabied friends may find it all a bit icky, but those of us with our own munchkins are entirely used to it, and won't hold it against you if your standards of perfection slip occasionally.

Also, on the topic of elimination communication: my experience is that there's no point fretting about it for the first six months or so. Don't be ashamed to keep a packet of disposables in a cupboard for emergencies, where emergencies = you could not be arsed to wash yet more nappies. Also, don't just listen for cues: the BatPup had a leg movement, like she was riding a bicycle upside down, that probably meant "poo is imminent".

After the last two babies, my only postpartum advice is: don't expect anything of yourself for the first six months beyond making sure you're both fed and reasonably clean. It's much less frustrating that way, and whenever you achieve anything it becomes a lovely surprise.

Such a lovely post to read, it almost made me clucky. I really envy you, discovering your new little person for the very first time. There's nothing else quite like it.

*hugs* you are far more coherent and better about writing these things down than I was at that stage :-)
You will figure out sometime how to go to the loo with bub in sling, it makes life easier until they get big enough to sit/lie on the floor just outside the door and be happy that way.
The spew- I'd forgotten the endless spew. It does stop eventually, I think it was at about 4-5 months for us. The best one was when K was playing with Aidan above his head and Aidan chose that moment to spew on K's face :-D
Seriously, for the first 3-4 months, if you get out of the house at all you're doing well, if you manage to do so with all items you inteded to take, so much better!

Hehe, we has the spew one night when Bron was changing D's nappy while wearing PJs. She managed to puke everything right into his pocket. Mmmmmmm, squidgy pocket full of baby spew :)

Tracksuit pants are an indispensable part of this technique IMO ;) Plus it's much easier in a ringsling than in a wrap as there are fewer dangly ends of fabric to worry about.
