I've always sort of wondered what the Night Rider was crying about, there. I mean, obviously he's bipolar, but still...
I looked up the lines, and they're "It's going. There'll be nothing left. It's all gone."
So I'm pretty sure he was dealing with the realization that his society is completely fucked. I'm guessing that's why he stole the cop car in the first place. He's dealing with loss on a scale we can't really comprehend, and his own feeling of doom.
I think that's what I love about Mad Max the most. Awesome action scenes, great characters -- and parts that make you think, too.
though he is my favorite non-max character in the mad max movies id never given him this much thought but i think that last thing you said is very true of the mad max movies and of the fallout games.
