in the past few years We have seen huge news stories happen I mean there have been several wars, scandals, absurd political happenings... and yet this story about the death of the crocodile hunter I think has gotten like a bazillion more posts than any other news story ever

I really like that the death of Steve Irwin was the top story on cnn...there is actually nothing more important than that.

its sad really. it feels like the popularity of chuck norris to me. meaning its a fad...his death is a fad everyone wants to talk about because its so out there.

I think it's more that his image was always so invincible and his death is thus so terribly unexpected. It has made people realize that if the Crocodile Hunter can die so easily, we can die just as suddenly as well. It's like when Neo tries to block one of the Merv's exiles' blades with his hand and it drips blood onto the floor--it's so shocking and vivid and memorable because it shatters the illusion of his invulnerability. It makes you remember that, no matter what we do, no matter how amazing our feats and accomplishments are, we're still humans and we can still bleed.
