A Piercing Reason to Blog Again

Feb 01, 2011 10:23

I was looking for a reason to start blogging again.  Instead, the reason came looking for me.

This week, I was “disinvited” to an upcoming March school visit.  It was scheduled way back in June, but some time during the last few days, someone from the school visited my website and found my appearance objectionable.  Evidently, my piercings are “ ( Read more... )

Schools seem to be very anti-piercing environments in general for adults. I am a female teacher and don't wear my nose ring to work- I am not tenured and worry that it would be frowned upon in the conservative rural community where I work. When I was in college, a girl was actually kicked out of our education program because she refused to take out her piercings or change her "unnatural" hair color for student teaching (we couldn't even wear CAPRI PANTS for student teaching, because ankles = scandalous IN 2007, so she was really "pushing the envelope").

I'm so saddened to hear this story. Tonight my ten year old wrote a letter (for a class project) to MLK's son, telling him how grateful he is that MLK stood up for equality. He pointed out that he (my son) is accepting of all people, people of every 'kind', because of MLK.

I think this applies here. I agree that the children in that school are being denied a chance to practice tolerance. I hope my son's school would never make this decision.

Rock on, my friend. Write on. Live on. And keep going out there and influencing the next generation!

Their loss! anonymous February 3 2011, 14:20:13 UTC
Well, how disappointing! It's a shame that people are quick to judge; one thing is certain, it's the students that lose. This could be such a teachable moment. Never when you visited my elementary students did your appearance ever cause a problem. All students could talk about was your great presentation and awesome books. All the teachers could talk about was the wonderful lessons you taught! Best wishes for your continued success. Always remember to focus on all the wonderful experiences & not the negative responses of ignorance.

This hurts my heart, Phil. I hope the school district DOES reconsider. Those kids need to hear what you have to say!
