From what I had seen of the Rose episode at cons, it had seemed to become too American for me. I am very glad that the end of Rose and The End of The World proved that idea wrong.
For me Doctor Who was never about special effects but about the story. The End of The World seemed like it could have been written 30 or more years ago with only modern music and references put in for good measure.
Like you, I am waiting to see more episodes on Friday nights and eventually the DVD set.

I got spoiled and actually watched the series online last year as it aired. I had heard BBC-America passed on the series and SciFi Channel wasn't interested, so I figured that would be the only way I could see the new Doctor without waiting 3-5 years for the DVD to be available in America. You are in for one heck of a roller coaster ride. Not all of the episodes are winners, but most are. I will be getting the season DVD set once it is out.

And I have to compliment whoever at SciFi placed the commercials. They actually found good spots to do the breaks rather than doing it mid-scene as I feared would happen (it's been 10 minutes, stop the show and go to commercial).
