I know what type of fire you mean, not sure of the name though. They're quite common here in Australia, in the colder regions anyway. It's perfectly save to leave them running during the day as they are enclosed. You would need to clean the flue at the end of each winter though.
How long is the rental agreement for? If it's only short, you could move in and look for something else in the meantime.
