these are my actual x-rays. when i was at the hospital today for my follow-up i had them burned onto cd. i thought i'd share this with my more scientifically/medically inclined friends. the rest of you are just going to have to deal - muhahahaha! apparently i should expect a full recovery. i'm in an air cast now and should be able to walk in a ( Read more... )

i was stuck at home for the first few days, in which time i watched like 20 movies. after that i started going for short walks. walking on crutches is really exhausting! i'm going to be pretty fit after this. i'm going back to work today. luckily the show we have in now doesn't require me to do anything so i'm just babysitting. i'll be on crutches for another couple of weeks and then in a walking cast. i have the cast already i just can't walk on my left foot yet. it looks like a stormtrooper boot, and i'm gonna stencil it up. i lucked out getting the cast, cause when i went to pay for it ($130) and my x-ray cd ($33), they forgot to charge me for the cast. score!

it is a pretty cool scar. it was weird having the doctor open up the temporary cast i had on and seeing staples in my leg. i'll have another smaller scar on the inside of my leg too.

dude, that's gonna look so diesel when it's all healed up. actually it looks like that already. hey i know how to do staples! although to be honest i only practiced stapling two pieces of fabric together with the staple-stitcher. also it's not exactly rocket science but i was totally scrubbed in like in ER or whatever the new doctor show is. do you know why they're always holding their hands up in the operating room on doctor shows? it's because after you scrub in (get sterilized) for surgery, if your hands fall below your waist they are considered to be no longer sterile. even though you're wearing a sterile gown that goes past your knees! no shit.
anyway thanks for the x-rays - they're really rad. i'm only just learning to read x-rays. sp

i'm sure the staple punctures won't scar - too bad cause it looks so cool. the incision on the left side of my ankle is shorter and it wasn't quite healed when the temporary half cast came off hence the bandage. their pretty intense though. it's kinda funny that this happened to me now because a department head at the jack singer just had a horrific ice climbing accident where his tibia (fibula? the bigger one) broke in half and the bottom half jammed into his knee while the top half went through the skin. when i think about that i think that this is no big deal. i was a little freaked out when they first started talking about screws and such. the more i discussed it with the doctors the more i understood that this is just the technology that is used now to heal bones and i will have a full recovery, whereas 15 years ago i may have been walking with a cane or severe limp for the rest of my life. the orthopedists in banff do probably a dozen of these types of surgeries a day and are very good at them - i was the first of three ( ... )

hey dude,
so i was reading up on calcium homeostasis and bone formation today and i thought of you - you see bone is stimulated to lay down new bone when it has stress applied against it (ie: weight-bearing exercise). so surgeons put pins into broken bones in order to hold them together in a way that allows people to walk on them a lot earlier, and thus speeds up the laying down of new bone. faster cure! you probably knew this, but whatever. sp

actually i didn't know any of that stuff. it made sense to me that exercise would help the healing, but i didn't know that it would help with bone formation. i started walking tonight and i was worried about compressing the joint or the fracture too much. for the most part it was good and i kept the crutches around to rest my ankle every so often. it was so nice being able to walk around a bit and have my arms free again. i can't walk stairs yet and when i'm outside i use the crutches due to the snow and ice, but it's all starting to feel better. having a walking cast is really nice because i can take it off and flex my ankle back and forth a bit. the incisions are still a bit sore. but yeah, thanks for the heads up about exercise. i'll keep on it without overdoing it.
