I have a friend who when she was a child came home to find her mother, brother, and sister murdered by her step dad. When her own first daughter was 4, she was killed in a car accident.. So as we sat there one night, she was asking me about my "situations" that make me sad the way I am. i apologized because my problems are nothing like the stuff she has been through. She made sure I understood that just because her past situations were big, that doesnt make mine any less less important or hurtful then hers were to her.
