I've heard good things about good Frye boots, but since I rarely wear shoes (yay for living in the Land of Flip Flops!) I don't have any first-hand experience.

I don't know anything about Frye shoes (I'm a typical PNW Fluevog fan), but I'm glad you're in a place to get really quality shoes and I think a respectful working environment is your karmic due, given how terrible the place if FL was for you.

And I am co-opting your LJ note to tell you that Darius and I will be visiting your fair city in mid-February. I've decided that I want to spend my hard-earned overtime on a trip for me and my kid, and his mid-winter break (in Feb) is going to be the best time to have that trip. And Virgin Air has $300 tickets from Seattle to JFK. So. Of *course* I'll chat more with you (and all the other NYC meece) when we're not so far away from the date, but you heard it here first.

looks like i'm getting different boots entirely, they are some italian something, a classic low cowboy boot shape but a little more refined and the shaft goes all the way up to the top of the kneecap (can be folded down). the fryes i saw weren't finished all that well on the inside and although they have edge to them in the styling, seem a little too tough to wear them at work convincingly. and if i'm going to drop $300 on shoes, they damn well better be versatile! will post pics once the purchase happens...
