one of my many obsessions

here's the truth: i am obsessed with makeover shows. well, not all of them, but two in particular:  what not to wear, and queer eye for the straight guy. i really love the original (bbc) wntw, but we don't get bbca, so i never get to see it any more. still, the tlc version does satisfy my need for makeover magic pretty nicely.

i also have to admit ( Read more... )

I was totally against pointy shoes... until I just kept seeing them day after day all the time in San Francisco when I'm going to work and going home. They have started to look normal to me and even kinda cute sometimes. I still will not WEAR them though. =) I think pointy shoes go with a certain type of pointy personality that I just do not have.

some of them look absurd to me; the less pointy ones aren't so bad, but some of them are just awful!

oh my. why does an entry like this just speak to everything i'm thinking. is that sad? probably. do i like it? yes!

i also love makeover shows- i'm not sure what it is. but i also like medical shows a whole lot...i think that there's just something about the malleability of bodies that really fascinates me. it also kind of horrifies me. i watched a plastic surgery makeover show once and i realized how sad some lives really are. they took someone that could have been helped with a haircut and some makeup and injected and molded her entire face. she was a different person! but through all the disgust i thought "gosh, i'd like a nosejob". how bad is that?

pointy toed shoes. my 6 month stint at dillard's gave me the ability to literally orate on absurd things like shoe toes. i feel like i should stand at a podium and charge admission sometimes. but really, you don't have to fall into the pointy toe trap just to get a feminine look. a lot of the secret is just to not go so chunky with the heel and not so enormous with the ( ... )

the medical shows make me feel sick. heh. but, truth be told, if i could wave a magic wand and transform my "flaws," i'd do it in an instant!

now, let's talk shoes:

i have a (sort of) wide foot, and comfort is an absolute must. i'm on my feet all day, sometimes literallly running, so my shoes need to be practical for that, as well. AND i'm short (5'4") and a size 12, and having an extra inch or 2 added to my height via my shoes makes me look MUCH more proportioned, so i almost never wear flats (except in the summer, when cheap, cute flip-flops beckon). all that said, CUTE is a must, as well. hotness is a virtue, ya know. *g*

because of all those factors, i tend to wear quite chunky shoes, generally (but not always) platforms because they're more comfortable. a chunky heel feels more stable.

SO. what should i be looking for?

WELL...we have opposite problems on the height dimension. i'm 5'10" and a size 4, so if i wear chunky shoes i look like even more of a beanpole....or like mickey mouse (i also wear a size 9 shoe, so who wants boats for feet?) i would say go for maybe a sleeker loafer that still has a wide heel but doesnt have a toe that fans out. you'd be surprised also that getting a shoe with a heel that doesnt have massive amounts of textured sole sticking out everywhere can make it look less chunky.

i just realized im wearing easy spirit driving mocs and a cardigan. maybe you shouldn't take advice from someone dressed like an 80 year old ;)

I could go on forever about WNTW. I'm pretty sure that if that's the only show I could watch for the rest of my life, I'd be ok with that.

I LOVE Stacy and Clinton. Whenever I go shopping I think "what would Stacy and Clinton think of this?" Usually that means I never get to buy anything though :(

Which reminds me...I keep meaning to look to see if they have an address you can email them questions at. My problem right now is that My bottom is bigger than my top. If I buy a shirt to fit around my wait, I do NOT fill it out, at all....even with a mondo push up bra. BUT, if I buy a shirt to fit my bust, it's too small around my stomach/waist/hips.

What's a girl to do????

I think if I ever wore outfits that would call for shoes other than trainers....I could go with pointy shoes. Though they're not my favorite look.

kari, check this out: http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/whatnottowear/bestyou/bestyou.html

you can email a pic and a question, and they might answer on the show!

and here's a link to the bbc show's site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/lifestyle/tv_and_radio/what_not_to_wear/index.shtml

they actually give tips on their site; you may find answers to your questions there.

did you watch wntw last night, the one about the female cop? i totally sympathized with her problem of finding tops that fit the bust without looking like maternity tops. that's an issue for me, too, and it's still pretty much just hit-&-miss.

Sweet links, thanks!

I don't have cable so I rarely get to see it anymore. Sometimes if I drag my ass to the work out room and no one's there I can catch it but...that's pretty much close to never.

I have the bottom bigger than my top. So I can never wear dresses!
Pointy shoes look odd. I have big feet so they look especially odd.
Have you tried GAP jeans? Their long and lean are great. So are JCrew Hipster flairs.
You could get your jeans tailored. I probably should, but I guess I'm too lazy.

i did have a pair of GAP long & leans, but they were a tad too big, and so never really looked great. i should go back and try some in the proper size. i've had some luck with levi's 515 nouveau boot cut, too. i haven't tried the jcrew ones.

the thing about jeans (and lots of other clothes) is that they may fit great in the dressing room, but then after you wear them awhile you discover that they stretch in odd places, or ride up, or whatever. and after having worn them for a few hours, you can't return them, so you're stuck with yet another pair of jeans that don't really fit quite right. *sigh*

and yeah, tailoring would be an ideal solution, but i'm too lazy, too, AND it's not cheap!

Yeah, its not cheap, that's why I've never done it. And I'm lazy!
I hate how jeans stretch out. I have problems with them sagging and then showing the world my butt crack. Stupid Jeans!!
