Do something for you.

That's it. Figure out what you love, figure out what it takes to do it (or something similar/related) all the time, and get paid for it. Maybe it involves further schooling--MAYBE IT DOESN'T.

First step: Make a list of ways you enjoy spending your time.

That is a very good idea. I don't think I've ever actually done that.

I know exactly what you mean. It's a game of hope. Sometimes it can really work out in a graduate's favor, sometimes it can't. In most cases, a degree can lead to a larger income and that's pretty much it. I just wonder if trapping myself in Ogden for the next two years is really worth some extra money that I would just piss through anyway. Plus, the other problem, is that if I had absolutely no skills or experience working at semi-important jobs, I would be screwed. But because I've worked and gotten a lot of experience and knowledge through that, I have this whole mental conflict playing out in my mind.

You know it is really interesting to me to hear you say all that. I spend a great deal of time promoting the idea of college to my 8th graders as this great and wonderful thing. I loved college and I loved grad school. I guess I need reminding that not everyone has a great time while they are there.

You just gave a an "aha" moment. Thanks.

You're welcome. I guess college is a system not everyone can work well in and enjoy. It begs the question, however, now that I know this what do I do?

Ask yourself whether being able to get a job doing what you are going to college to do is worth it. What I don't understand is how you expect to be happy in a field that you are so unhappy in as a student. For example, if I were a math major in college I would be miserable. As a theatre major and education major I was happy ( ... )
