Road tax: Big brother is watching

Given the rate at which signatures are appearing (55,000 since late last night) it is clear that this is an issue which could single-handedly lose the Government the election.

I don't think they'd be that stupid. The Poll Tax protests would look like a small picnic if it were ever seriously proposed.

Given that road use is already usage-taxed by fuel duties, I'm tempted to think there are two reasons for their wanting this. One is that it will let them raise taxes by more than they can get away on fuel duties (and claim it's "environmental") and the other, as you say, is the personal tracking (which can then easily be extended to global speed monitoring and thus rake in another raft of income).

/me signed this petition weeks ago. Won't do any good (as "nanny knows best") but it felt good.
